After going back and watching some of Jalen's play this year, recalling Jalen's play from last year, and reading some of Coach White's comments about Jalen, I've come to the conclusion that Jalen is all about Jalen, and not about the team. He isn't playing sound defense, he isn't blocking out, he isn't rebounding. Apparently he isn't showing any better in practice than he is in games.
If that's the case, then I agree with Mike White's approach. If Jalen isn't getting it done in practice, he rides the pine until he's willing to give his all to the team, first in practice, then in games.
A sports psychologist is good at calming down someone's mind who is "trying too hard", and helping with mental toughness. Jalen may have other factors that are causing self-defeating behaviors, in which case cognitive behavioral therapy might help him turn it around in fairly short order.
Or it could be that Jalen is just lazy, in which case he's doomed to ride the pine this year, spend a few months in Europe before being cut, at which point basketball will be completely off the table for him and he'll be forced to do something else.
