I don't know how this isn't obvious. The spearing and head to head hits only became common after the age of leather helmets. remember those huge pads linebackers used to wear to support their necks so they could battering ram people?Take away the facemask and see how many people tackle with their head and face.
Watch a little Australian Rules Football or Union Rugby…you tackle with your shoulders and you turn.
