It was, and yet it may not have been his single greatest achievement. He changed the way the college game was played. Bryant, Switzer, Hayes, McKay, Osborne, even Saban and Meyer — these were all guys who lived by the run and by, in relative terms, cautious thinking.

Spurrier was DIFFERENT. He came at you pitching the ball from the opening kick.

Crete, I’ve got to respectfully disagree with you on this one. IMO, of the 3 coaches you referenced, only one was handed the keys to a Ferrari and it was Zook. ND was on a serious down slide under Lou Holtz before Davie took over. His last 3 seasons were 5, 3 & 3 loss seasons and then he & his team pussed out playing Auburn in the bowl game because Holtz was afraid he’d lose his last game before his retirement (some say it was a strongly encouraged retirement by the admin). Davie didn’t do great but if you look at his overall record at ND he was almost at a .600 win percentage, not atrocious but also not a Ferrari for the next guy.

Zook, on the other hand, was handed a team coming off a great season with a ton of returning talent in key areas.

It wasn’t just a few years ago that most people assumed it was a given that not only would Saban pass Bear Bryant for all time NCs but also win more than him at Bama. Neither are a given anymore in my mind.

I definitely don’t think he’ll pass him for most at Bama. He may tie him for most at Bama by winning one more (and by default, have the most of all time including his one at LSU) but I’d say his chances of doing that are 25% at best.

Saban’s hanging in there in search of #7. I can’t imagine any other reason why he still wants to coach.

Weren't some of Bryant's NC's shared(I believe USC in 78) and a few other were just "proclaimed" by Bama? Saban's titles there are all outright and legit....

As far as just proclaimed, no, not with Bryant’s. All of his were based on AP and/or UPI rankings. Some of his were split titles, though.

Saban’s 2003 title at LSU was actually a split with USC, Coaches (BCS) poll for LSU, AP poll for USC.

I think its more difficult these days to win a NC. During Bear’s day, they soaked all the kids so other teams couldn’t get them. Rosters
I had always heard it was the 01 Caines and this analysis supports that:

The Most Talented College Football Team In History

                86 was second.

Wasn't USC's vacated though? Makes it pretty legit.

No one gives a fvkk about neanderthal football.

You can go back to your stick of butter and the Big 10 network reruns. It's yours and you can touch it as much as you like.

They vacated their 2004 BCS title but 2003 AP title still stands.

Because it wasn't an "official" title?

It certainly wasn't because Reggie Bush and his family weren't living in a beach front home provided by boosters.

Nah, probably more like a plea bargain. NCAA wasn’t nearly as tough on them as you were on the poor chumps that found themselves in your prosecutorial cross hairs.

This is the great Bama coach with an all-white team who got his azz kicked till he figured the negroes could play "ketch".

My point was until the time the 86NC game was played but you are correct. The other thing Drunkey doesn't understand is that while SOS changed the way the game was coached/played he wasn't even coaching CFB until (87?). That doesn't take away from the game itself. I'll also add that while I despised Miami and rooted against them no matter who they played there was no denying that they played a very "modern" style of football and were considered a great passing team which forced other programs to reconsider their offense.

Really ass munch.... I was a fan of UF before SOS and appreciate what he did but CFB did not begin in 1990 and this thread was specifically about best coaches in the last 50 years. When you keep bringing up B10 and referencing PSU it only looks makes you look more ignorant as they didn't join that conference until the 1990's....

Now run along before I get Ox to unlock all those 2015 post where you were raving about Butters and telling everyone how we were gonna be like Bama and Treon was head and shoulders above Grier.....

Although, he doesn’t have a stocked trophy case, Bill Snyder is probably one of the best coaches of all time.

Kansas State (think about that, Kansas STATE) was a tough out and competed for Nattys.

Put that man at a real school with real talent, and he’s in everyone’s top 10
