When he's been at the rush, granted few and far between, I thought he did well. If Campbell is indeed back this week, we will see. Chatfield I think has also done pretty well and Dexter for being a true freshman. Need some DT's in this class

I would think this would have you jumping for joy. Leaves room for some LBs and Safeties.

not so fast my friend . we can only have 25 initial counters per year and every transfer or HS signee is a counter (if they make it to school). The kids tranfering out makes room on the 85 limit but we do not get a linebacker or a DT to replace them. we get the same 25 as everyone else the next year.

So now we're putting the blame on Savage?
Lol. Last I checked he isn't responsible for recruiting.
For those of you thinking that we're going to recruit 250# kids out of high school, and expect them to pack on 30-40 pounds of muscle in two years, well good luck with that.
The issue is recruiting, and we all know it. The problem is that now it's too late. We are who we are.

We arent receuiting 250# DL. We are recruiting 210# Rush and playing them at SDE and WDE/Rush at 220-240#.

              That's completely unacceptable.
No wonder we're getting pushed around.
What is the average weight of the SEC starting O line?

It’s actually closer to 290 now.

But that’s just because we’re included.

I haven’t seen anything more than clips of the workouts, but I believe, as has been mentioned, that you can tell a difference in the OL. Agility looks better to the naked eye. Strength is better, not great, but better and heading in the right direction. I think the skilled O players look better.

The problem is on the D side at all position levels. It isn’t a difference in workouts. It’s a difference in initial size and strength. Too many not ready for prime time players. In other words, of the players we sign on this side of the ball, too many aren't SEC caliber and a lot of them never will be. We strike out too much on kids that need a year to get ready for SEC play or can help immediately. We settle for too many that might be there developmentally by the end of their eligibility, if then. They’re mostly great kids. But as a coach told a friend of mine who coached DBs and had to send three white kids that were “hard workers” out to play Valdosta and Lowndes...”Coach, they’re super young men! Great kids! But those great kids will get your ass beat and fired to boot!”

Last thing I’ll say about Savage is the kids seem to respect him and have bought into his program. That’s an important testament to what the guy and his staff is bringing. The onus is squarely on recruiting moving forward. In the meantime, the D staff better hypnotize their kids, chain ‘em up and feed ‘em raw meat, wash their feet in a wash tub full of Ms. Rudolph’s piss...whatever they’ve got to do to get off the field before the opposition scores.

Need to find about 2-3 330 LB DLmen and let the Savage get ahold of them in the weight room. Dan should list it as immediate playing time.

I don't really have time to do the SEC average but here is ATM:
                        Moore 315 Green 325 McCollum 300 Hockner 325 Green 320
                        vs.
                        Cox 250 Slaton 340 Carter 290 Moon 250

How hard is it for an OC to say.....hmmmmm.... I kinda like 320 on 250?

My 15 year old is on the JV team for Tift County. Opening game was Lowndes, who they finished the season with last year and got absolutely whipped from start to finish. This year was no different. It’s really sad to see how terrible the Tift football program is, how disorganized and undisciplined the players are, and that starts during middle school ball, but especially comes to fruition at the JV and Varsity levels. Lowndes, on the other hand, well coached, very disciplined and had a good rotation of players on both sides of the ball. It was a well oiled machine.

Tift looked like a Butters and Nuss special. False starts, no rotation of players(so by the 3rd quarter they were toast), unsportsmanlike penalties that killed drives, exactly what you’d expect from a piss-poor coached team.

I’m going to strongly encourage him to play baseball next year instead.

Tift County isn’t the Tift County of old. When I first got in the business, Gene Brodey was running things and the Blue Devils were a strong, tough, hard-hitting bunch that would knock your d!ck in the dirt. They were always well-coached. When Brodey retired, they hired Eddie Feeley from Florida who had a stroke before the season and the team fell apart under the interim, Gerry Riopelle, and the program hasn’t really been the same since, save a few teams here and there.

I have met Coach Anders, who seems like a nice guy, and the Devils were physical when we played them, but they were pretty one-dimensional offensively and have been in the shadow of Lowndes, Valdosta, and other similar sized schools / traditional rivals. Seems like there were some political issues as well. I believe a lot of the old guard aren’t happy, so there will likely be change.

If your son enjoys the game, I hope he will keep playing and I also hope Tift’s proud tradition will return quickly. There’s a lot to learn about life on the football field. Getting up when you get knocked down, working hard when you might not feel like it, and learning to be reliable (do your job / be accountable) have helped me for 40-some odd years. Good luck to your son and the Blue Devils moving forward.

I appreciate the sentiment and I agree, they had a somewhat rich tradition in the past. They were at least the kind of team you couldn’t just look past when you had to play them, but it hasn’t been that way for a long time, unfortunately.
