GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida has hired Southern Illinois tight ends and special teams coach Keith Murphy in an off-the-field capacity.

The program's team website lists Murphy as a quality control specialist for special teams on its staff directory. That helps fill the void left on the quality control staff created when Marc Nudelberg took a job at Nevada as a running backs coach and special teams coordinator.

Murphy has nearly two decades of coaching experience. He worked at Eastern Washington as a receivers and special teams coach from 1999-2006. He spent two years working for the St. Louis Rams as an assistant special teams and offensive quality control coach from 2007-08. He then spent four years at New Mexico State coaching special teams and tight ends before taking the Southern Illinois job.

The Gators still have a quality control position open. John Garrett, who was on the 2015 staff as an offensive quality control assistant, took a job at Richmond as offensive coordinator this offseason.

I'm guessing Nord hears the footsteps coming. This may be a way of paving a transition - get Murphy in now, he gets familiar with the program and roster, then as Nord 'retires' next year Murphy is ready to step in.

Basically an extension of the staff that can't do any on field coaching during game or be our on the road recruiting. They ate football coaches that can't technically be considered coaches. It's s way to skirt the rules on number of coaches. Bama has been doing it forever

Nord never wanted the special teams coach job. Mac assigned him to it by default. Nord did a good job with the tight ends, don't know about his recruiting territory or skills.

All of our coaches don't need to be wet behind the ears for us to be successful. I agree we need better special teams play and this new "QC" person hopefully will help.

The kick-off drive starts would have been 8-10 yards better if we had just taken touchbacks on all the kick offs.

Hardin's problems had nothing to do with Nord.
