Id say that if Meyer said what was quoted, he is pretty thin skinned. Kid is just a kid, 17 years old, you dont have to be a d*ck in the way you tell a kid that his early game tape wasnt all that impressive. Obviously, the reason he didn't get more love early on was b/c he wasn't playing at a high level yet. And there is a simple and decent way to say that to a kid. "Coach, how come a year ago, when I came up here yall didn't really take interest in me, but now all of a sudden you are really recruiting me hard?"
See there's a good way and a bad way to answer that question. What is attributed to Meyer is a bit childish. Throwing the fact that he's "insubstantial" in his face multiple times is pretty childish.
Good way: "Well son, we noticed a tremendous jump in your progress and abilities in the past year. I wish we had seen it sooner and offered you earlier, but hey, we're here now, and would really love to have you." Simple, honest, and decent. It aint that hard.
Now there is the possibility that what the kid says happened didn't. But if it did, Im inclined to agree. Meyer is the only adult in the room, he should be setting the example.
