Whitey Ford, mainstay of the New York Yankees pitching staff through the '50's and 60's (1967) died Thursday at 91. When he passed he was watching his Yankees vs. Rays playoff game.

Ford had the best winning percentage of any pitcher in the 20th Century, 236 wins and 106 losses (.690). This year we've parted company with Tom Seaver, Lou Brock, Bob Gibson and Al Kaline. Ford won 10 World Series games, the most of any pitcher, and that's with serving in the U.S Army for two years, 1951 & 52.

Nothing better than watching Whitey and the Yankees or Gibson and the Cardinals on TV with Dizzy Dean and Peewee Reese broadcasting the game of the week. That's where I learned the game and grew to love it. RIP

Whitey Ford was not an overpowering pitcher like Bob Gibson. He was crafty, methodical, workmanlike, efficient. He was a machine who rarely made a mistake. His nickname was the Chairman of the Board. Ford took care of business on the mound like it was another day at the office. Off the field Ford had another persona. Ford and teammates Mickey Mantle and Billy Martin were famous for their late night carousing which used to drive Manager Casey Stengel nuts. It was a great era of baseball.

The Yankees dominated baseball. You either loved or hated them.
