The athletic department turns a large profit every year. The reason that we have debt is the same reason that virtually every major company has debt. When you can get a better return on investment than your cost of debt, you borrow money.

But the real issue is the prioritization of the spending. We spend way more than our peers on non revenue sports and we are kicking our peers' tails in those sports. We spend way less than our peers on football and we are getting our tails kicked.

We could get away with overspending on the non revenue sports a decade ago because we had so much more money than everyone else. The landscape has changed and even schools like Vanderbilt are collecting $40 million a year in revenue sharing from the league based on TV contracts. We have to change too if we want to compete.

Bernie, good post and agree w/ all of it. I'l add, I don't think there's any problem w/ non-revenue sport spending. The problem isn't now, we're correcting the problem (football spending). The problem is/was, as Law argues, that Foley neglected football spending until it became a problem. While we were adding a fresh coat of paint to our already old dorm rooms, the Alabama's were building state of the art/modern facilities literally with waterfalls. We all joke about the waterfalls, but it's like comparing the lobby of a Ritz Carlton vs. the lobby of Motel 6. If we had steadily made investments back into the program we wouldn't have fallen so far behind. It's inexcusable and it happened on the G.O.A.T.'s (Foley's) watch. He failed in that aspect and there's no denying it. I've posted on here dozens of times about the IPF. How many threads were started about an IPF over the years (on this and other message boards) and poster after poster said "we don't need an IPF!!! We're Florida dammit!!" Well, guess what? We lost the arms race.....and we're paying the price. We're showing recruits pictures of our future plans. Meanwhile FSU, Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, Michigan, etc are literally walking the recruits into their existing state of the art facilities.

Hopefully by 2019 or so this won't be an issue. There should be new construction every 2-3 years, at a minimum a renovation project.

Comment on Clayton:

With the “next men up” fighting for minutes in the rotation, Bryan and Jefferson have seen several of Florida's underclassmen make massive leaps in their development. One of them is former five-star freshman Antonneous Clayton, who has added considerable mass to his frame and appears poised for a breakout sophomore campaign.

“Oh, boy. He's put on some weight,” Jefferson said of Clayton. “I've seen that guy from the time he got here, he's just been dedicated to putting on weight. That's something that he wanted to do. You can definitely see a change for the better for him. Of course he's going to turn heads this year.”

I have been waiting with baited breath to see him get his chance. Hope he OWNS and DESTROYS our opponents this year.

I checked and the operations run at a loss that is more than covered by contributions. Making 12 million on our revenue is not that much. And yes you borrow money in a business if you can produce more profit, but not if you have cash. And just spending money does not correlate with success, or at least that is my considered opinion. If we need something or it would produce better results I am fine with getting the resources by whatever means possible.

I'm looking forward to a great year where our young talent gets a chance to shine.
Franks is going to OWN and DESTROY the competition this season.

It's gonna be great, believe me.
I think we'll be very lucky to make a bowl this year. I can't think any recent years I've felt this bad about us. That might actually be good thing with my track record lately.

Lucky to make a bowl? So you mean to say you think we'll have an overall losing record?
Get outta here man :lol2:

We're thin at defensive tackle, we don't have any corners, very young and thin at linebacker. We're chasing awful grad transfers at qb and our OC had put up 3 years in a row of 100+ ranked offenses. Our schedule is brutal. I really don't think its a stretch for us to lose 7 games. Outside of our cupcakes, who do you really feel good about us beating?

I actually view our schedule as favorable, especially when you consider that our toughest games are pretty much at home.

I'm looking at 3 losses being reasonable, but it depends on how the QB shakes out.
I'm absolutely, without a doubt, confident we won't lose 7 games....and I'll take that bet right now...hell I'd take that bet in real money too

I don't believe you. After the "offensive" (pun intended) display of football the last 7 years, I won't believe anything until I see it on the field.

Hope like hell you're right.

Seems to be a common theme. Everyone predicting doom and gloom won't bet
No sir, i sure won't. Why would any fan bet against his team like that? But I get it,man. Go ahead and take a jab at me because i don't think we'll win 9 games.

Ok, here ya go. You seem so eager to get beyotchslapped. If LDR isnt hurt (dressed is good enough no matter if he is questionable or 50 % or whatever) and he starts, you wear I am Donk's beyotch for a month. If someone else starts (and LDR is dressed) I wear "I am URG's beyotch" for a month.

Wanna go with this 3 loss prediction of yours? I will take that one for a year of wearing the tag.

There ya go. I never do this.
