Dan Mullen tells story to highlight importance of coaches visiting every HS in state

Florida coach Dan Mullen speaks to fans in Lakeland, Fla., on Monday night.

LAKELAND, Fla. — Dan Mullen says he wants his Florida coaching staff in every high school in the state as the Gators set their recruiting board for 2019, 2020 and beyond.

That’s not a goal. It’s a mandate.

“We better be at them all,” Mullen said Monday night before his speaking event in Lakeland. “Every one of our coaches has an area to recruit in the state of Florida, so we have 10 assistants in the state of Florida recruiting in different areas. I’m talking about getting into every school.”

Mullen mentioned how over the winter he stopped by Mount Dora Christian Academy, northwest of Orlando, which is within the area he used to recruit when he was the offensive coordinator on Urban Meyer’s 2005-08 Florida teams.

He didn’t recognize the school, though.

“That used to be my area, [and I’m thinking], ‘I’ve never been here before.’ And I felt bad. I looked, ‘Established in 1930-something.’ I’m like, ‘Uh oh,'” Mullen said. [And they said], ‘Coach, we weren’t playing football when you were here before.’ I’m like, ‘Thank goodness.’ I almost broke my own rule. [When] I was coaching at Florida before, the big rule we had was to get into every school in the state and make sure you’re not missing prospects.”

Mullen recalled how Florida’s coaching staff had different evaluations than the recruiting services on former Gators and current NFL offensive linemen Mike Pouncey and Maurkice Pouncey. According to the 247Sports composite records, Mike Pouncey was rated a 3-star prospect in the 2007 recruiting class and Maurkice was rated a 4-star prospect, but that may not have been the case when the Florida coaches first took notice of them.

Mullen reflects the same way on running back Jeff Demps, eventually rated on the 247Sports composite as a 4-star prospect, and the No. 27 running back, in that 2008 recruiting class.

“I remember being here and going to see a Jeff Demps at South Lake High School. He wasn’t really being recruited. And then like, ‘Wow, there’s something about this kid that I love and I think that maybe he’s better than the hype,'” Mullen said. “There probably weren’t as many recruiting services back then. But I think it does give you the opportunity to get in and really form your recruiting base — not just for the ’19 class — and get an evaluation on those guys, but for the future classes where we have a really good grasp on the state of Florida and all the players that are here.”

Mullen took the same approach during his nine years as coach at Mississippi State, and the best such story comes from his time in Starkville, Miss.

Offensive line coach John Hevesy, who followed Mullen back to Florida, was making his rounds in the state when he visited Houston (Miss.) High School and stumbled upon under-the-radar prospect Chris Jones, a defensive tackle who would star for the Bulldogs and go on to NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs.

The 247Sports composite has Jones as a 5-star prospect in the 2013 recruiting class, but that wasn’t the case when Hevesy found him, Mullen says.

“Chris Jones’ recruiting story — which is one of the great recruiting stories — he was a three-year player and a draft pick by the Chiefs. No one knew about him,” he said. “John Hevesy walked into the school, and they were like, ‘Hey, we have this kid. He didn’t play last year. He’s a basketball guy. He’s going to play this year.’ Luckily [Hevesy] stayed to go to practice, he looked at the coach and said, ‘Who else has been here?’ He said, ‘No one.’ He went back the last day the school was open in spring, right before they finished classes and said, ‘Has anybody else come?’ He said, ‘No.’

“[Hevesy said], ‘Can you get him down to coach’s office tomorrow?’ Heck, the family came in and they didn’t even know if I was a football or basketball coach. … He committed to Mississippi State before he even had a profile on Rivals or Scout or 247.”

Great story. Very few kids are going to fall through the cracks like that. I hope that's not a recruiting strategy. Find me diamonds in the rough. I'll puke. It's way too easy for kids to get exposure these days. I'm not saying that if you do find one don't grab...I'm saying that we should use our time wisely and efficiently. Visiting every school sounds kinda stupid in this day and age.

Agree. It's not a great strategy for your Plan A's, but you never know what you'll find. There's tons of kids littered throughout 1AA that didn't get a sniff from D1 schools that end up in the NFL and/or would have been D1 starters.

Brandon James is a kid who that staff found that was a 'diamond in the rough'. Sure, he was mainly a return specialist, but that's well worth a scholarship. Luckily for him he went to a powerhouse school (St. Augustine was really good back then) and we were recruiting his teammate. But there are tons of kids like that out there, especially the one's who are an inch or two "too short" (lots of 6'1 DE's or 6' LB's or 6'2 OL's get overlooked because they aren't considered tall enough).

My point is risk vs reward, cost vs benefit...there's an opportunity cost for visiting every podunk school in the 4th most populous state in the US. All the time and resources you are spending looking for the next Chris Jones is time you could be spending on those top 50/100 kids in FL TO GET THEM TO COME TO FREAKING FLORIDA!

Agree, it's a MSU strategy because you are more or less admitting that you cant compete with the big boys for the 4-5 stars so you have to outsmart them by finding the hidden gem under a rock.

Mullen needs to move on from that defeatist plan and prove quickly he can go toe to toe with FSU, Miami, and the SEC, Big 10, ACC schools for the Rivals 150, particularly those in state.

Doc Holliday is probably the best recruiter we ever had.

He said we recruit the schools and the HS coaches first, worry about the kids later.

If you want to win the state back, this is how you do it.

And winning. Winning cures everything.

Exactly! In two years, whenever, the small high school has a hot shot, well, they know you and they call you. I have personally seen the same strategy employed successfully for recruiting academic students.

This kid was expected to commit a few weeks ago and it never happened. We're in on a lot of DBs, so it's not a worry (DL and OL are a concern). But it would be nice to get some momentum. It's also concerning that LSU hasn't offered when he's in their backyard. Maybe they think they can get him no matter what...or he's a Plan B for them?

New Orleans CB Chester Kimbrough still favoring Florida, eyeing official visit

CB Chester Kimbrough talks Gators
Florida is trying to land a package deal at cornerback from the state of Louisiana in the Class of 2019.

The Gators took the lead last month for 4-star CB Chester Kimbrough (New Orleans), while 5-star CB Derek Stingley Jr.(Baton Rouge) named Florida in his top 3 on Monday along with LSU and Texas.

Kimbrough and Stingley are teammates on the Louisiana Bootleggers 7-on-7 squad, and both were in attendance for the Orange & Blue Game. Kimbrough named the Gators his top team following that visit, and they still hold the edge in his recruitment.

“One thing I rely on is communication and the communication with me is there,” Kimbrough said when asked how the Gators have maintained their lead. “They have a good relationship with me and that’s what Florida is doing. They just keep it 100 with me and they tell me a lot.”

Part of that conversation has been about a return trip to Gainesville. Florida stopped by Kimbrough’s high school this week and made plans to officially visit later this year.

“They came on Monday and want me to come up there for an official visit in December,” he said. “I’ll be straight with that.”

Kimbrough was on commitment watch heading into his trip to the spring game, so it wasn’t a surprise when he named Florida his No. 1 school. However, he hasn’t thought about pulling the trigger because he wants to take his time with the recruiting process.

“I want to play this thing out, wait and see what I go through and have a good experience with my recruitment,” he said.

Are the Gators way out in front?

“Mississippi State, Ole Miss, a lot of them are pushing hard,” said Kimbrough, who holds more than 20 offers. “Other ones like Texas, Michigan sometimes and Alabama. Any school can take my interest fast. It just matters if you communicate with me.”

Kimbrough is ranked the nation’s No. 30 cornerback in the 247Sports composite. In addition to Florida, he has three more schools in mind for official visits.

“I was supposed to go to Texas [on May 5], but I had state track meet,” Kimbrough said. “So Texas, Ole Miss, Alabama . I only got five visits, so I’ve got to choose wisely.”

Will LSU offer Chester Kimbrough?
One program that’s not in the mix for Kimbrough is LSU. The in-state Tigers have yet to offer the 6-foot, 175-pound corner, but the coaches are evaluating him as a potential target.

Sam Spiegelman covers LSU recruiting for SEC Country and addressed Kimbrough’s situation on Tuesday:

“Kimbrough has been a camp superstar this spring, making LSU fans wonder why the in-state team has yet to offer. … Kimbrough publicly named Florida as his leading school and will make an official visit there in December. Ole Miss and Mississippi State are two schools still pushing hard. As are Alabama and Michigan, who are also in the mix for official visits. Kimbrough is being patient with this, so don’t expect a decision anytime soon. LSU has kept in touch but not consistently. Kimbrough wants an offer — and understands he’ll need to camp for one. He remains iffy if he’ll show up next month, but odds are he will. After all, he’s a competitive player and an offer from LSU would justify a lot for him personally.”

I won’t argue that DM needs to manage his recruiting time wisely... However, some of you have been bellyaching about concentrating on recruiting the state of FL and after this story you’re STILL finding reasons to piss and moan.

And yet, I’m not surprised.

At all.

Two people are "bellyaching", the rest of us seem to not have a problem with it...

Just an fyi...there are 2,344 high schools in the state. That's 234 per coach. I guess that doesn't seem like that much.

That's how many are playing football? I don't think it's a big deal. I doubt they go every year, but make the rounds and it adds up. You never know when a school will have a prospect.

Eli Williams is a HS coach in Orlando (Jones HS, I believe - he's been there one or two seasons after being the head coach at another school). His teams have sent players to Miami, FSU, Ohio State, Clemson, USF and others....but none to UF. Why do you think that is? Probably because McElwain and his staff were too lazy to make an effort. You should commend Mullen for making an effort. Hopefully it starts to pay off. If not in 2019, soon.

Turns out Mac is a racist and afraid to go to Jones.
