Flores did a decent job in Miami and I was blown away that they launched him after being a considerable upgrade from the previous two decades. So he's right to have an issue with them. I'm just not sure it's race related. In fact, if I'm the Dolphins' counsel, I'd go with a "Trust me, it's not about race, we're just really really stupid" defense.

As for the rest, he's probably correct to a degree. The problem is the Rooney rule that forces these teams to do this. I don't think there's a single team in the NFL that's opposed to hiring a black coach. But that doesn't mean that they may not have someone else they prefer and immediately target. But they can't because of the rule. So they have to sit through a sham interview with someone they don't actually want, and get the hopes of someone who isn't going to be hired, which is a complete disservice and disrespect to everyone involved.

It hurts to be a jags fan.

@AllbrightNFL: Doug Pederson will need 3 wins to move into 5th place on the Jaguars all-time wins list, replacing current 5th place HC Urban Meyer.

Probably had a place at one point in time. Like any legislation, it should evolve with the current climate. You shouldn’t have to force any NFL owner to hire, or even interview, someone against their will. If they knowingly pass on a qualified black head coach candidate, then let them pay for it when some other team has success with him. As always, the market will correct things.

Anyway, let’s not derail this thread and get back to the core of the discussion—the Dolphins are the worst run NFL franchise outside of Detroit.

Didn’t the 49ers just win a playoff game while failing to score an offensive touchdown?

Yeah it’s Miami. Consider him hired.
You play to win the game.

At least he’s not some butthurt douche that when all else fails, pulls the race card.

@AdamSchefter: Texans have included Lovie Smith in their discussions all along, but his candidacy as head coach has gained steam in recent days, per source.

No one dares hire a non-black coach at this point.

Lovie Smith is another recycled NFL joke.

For their new head coach the Miami Dolphins have hired a 5'9" analytics dweeb who has never played football. Not even in high school.

He was a WR at Yale.

McDaniel was originally born in Aurora, Coloradoin 1983. He graduated from Smoky Hill High School in 2001, choosing to attend Yale University while being a member of the football team and studying history.[1]
Reports seem to be mixed on that. But at least he checks the POC box. Or half the box at least.

Miami Dolphins hire 49ers’ Mike McDaniel as new head coach

The Miami Dolphins have appointed San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel as their new head coach.

McDaniel will replace Brian Flores, who was fired on 10 January and has since filed a lawsuit that alleges the NFL “is racially segregated and is managed much like a plantation”.

McDaniel, who identifies as multiracial, is now one of only four minority head coaches in the NFL along with the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Mike Tomlin, the Washington Commanders’ Ron Rivera and Robert Saleh of the New York Jets. McDaniel is the first person of color to land a head coaching job in this cycle.

The 38-year-old McDaniel did not play football at any significant level and studied history at Yale before interning at the Denver Broncos. He slowly worked his way up the NFL ladder, becoming the 49ers’ offensive coordinator in January 2021.

McDaniel is seen as one of a number of innovative young coaches in the NFL, and the 49ers reached the NFC conference game this season, beating the No 1 seed Green Bay Packers along the way. McDaniel helped develop Deebo Samuel into a dual threat as a receiver and rusher, and the player was named an All-Pro this season.

“He’s one of the smartest coaches I’ve been around,” said 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan of McDaniel last month. “… He’s been huge to our team and huge for me throughout my entire career.”

McDaniel’s path to the point of being considered a potential head coach has been one of the most remarkable steady rises in recent memory. McDaniel didn’t come from a playing background, or even a coaching one, nor did he benefit from nepotism. Hell, he has a degree in history from Yale — not exactly the kind of football resume you expect.

Starting as an intern with the Denver Broncos in 2005, McDaniel slowly rose his way through NFL ranks. He was an offensive assistant with the Texans and Washington, before becoming Washington’s wide receiver coach in 2013. He then took the same job with the Browns, before leaving to become an offensive assistant with the Falcons — then finally landed with the 49ers.
