Brian Johnson is going to be an NFL HC in the next two years. The chatter has already started with what he’s done with Hurts.

If we wanted to keep Johnson we should have canned Mullen when he basically quit caring the last half of 2020 after the GA game and got himself put on probation and given him an interim year to show he was up to the task.

That was the type of risk I was willing to take as well. Johnson checked a lot of boxes and was already here. His change of the offense was the best brief period of offense since 2008. We’re rolling the dice either way. I’d have been ok with giving a 3 year shot over keeping a disinterested Mullen and then experimenting with a G5 again.

That's exactly where I stand. I only hope he hires a good OC and leave the play calling alone. I really don't see that getting better in year 2, or ever.
He needs a QB/passing game coach. The run game is fine. Our Special Team play is the worst. He could get a new ST/QB/Passing coordinator...ala LSU 2020.

We don't need a new HC.

I fear the opposite. I fear a top 10 finish in recruiting obscuring failures in game management and player development, to the point where either side of the argument, in support or against, work together to create an unhappy and elongated status quo.

Too much money being pumped in to accept mediocrity. I mentioned students talking after the UK game about how much money the football team was getting in perks(facilities and other things) and “they still suck”, before lamenting about how they didn’t have that type of support. This was always a this equals that pitch. When it doesn’t, heads will roll.

I have to disagree. We're on the hook for 85% of the remaining sum of his contract if he's termed without cause. At the conclusion of next season, the determinative point you cite, that figure is $25.5m.

We've been paying legacy buyouts for eight years. I'm not sure how much appetite there is to add another whopping sum to it.

He’ll get a third year, even if it’s incomplete and he’s a known dead man walking going in. As I said, we’ll know by fsu next year. The 24 season will be just to save money and prevent the “that’s too quick” arguments from the national media if that’s indeed the case.

And by that point we could own the nation's most underperforming roster of four-star recruits. Just saying.

I’ve said that as well. This isn’t 2005 or even 2011 any more where a coach walks into a great locker room of talent that are staying mainly because they have to. The portal changed all that. So even that “silver lining, the next guy will be set” argument is extremely antiquated.

I loved his offense and it was potent with a descent or better QB. Anytime we got bogged down was because Mullen forced a QB draw in with Trask or killed momentum sitting a Heisman candidate on the bench. Slinging the ball around again was such a breath of fresh air after the duds we kept bringing in with pee wee playbooks. Instead we chose to bring back half of Butters playbook.

Right now I’m still hoping he’s a great salesman and can at least stock the cupboard. Gonna see if he learned stubbornness from his mentor Butters and refuses to change or looks at Saban and Dabo and realizes they had to adapt to keep winning.

Also says you aren’t good at judging ability, or were vastly unprepared for what this level requires. In either event, it’s not good. If all the references and comparisons we’ve discussed, Swinney is probably the closest. Unless we’re just willing to let this play out for 5-6 seasons in hopes that it all comes together, we need to start making initial steps next fall, minus a huge improvement.

I wonder if Sasse will be more interested in football than the Fuchstard was.
What’s funny is he apparently made some comments about football being king, that of
course ruffled the feathers of the women’s teams fans. Would love if we had a President that realized a cash cow needs to be taken care of properly.

Here's the thing though....Saban had already won a NC at LSU and took a doormat of the B10 and made them a contender in that conference(maybe you remember the 1999/2000 Citrus Bowl?). He had spent a couple of years in the NFL and had a rolodex stuffed full of asst. coaches at his disposal who had recruited in the southeast for the last decade. In other words he had a proven track record. Billy won a few games for what is really like a 6A HS program. Just a slight bit of difference.
Don't forget Billy only won his conference championship AFTER his team somehow got an All-American lineman and an SEC caliber running back on his Sunbelt team. I see Dion doing this right now at Jackson St. Buy a couple of players that belong in the bigger leagues... blow away your competition... look like an amazing winner (because your roster is stacked with ringers)... get a job in the major leagues.

I have no hope he’ll do that. My hope hinges on AR’s limitations and he’s being forced to play all this way. We knew he was going to do this coming in, and we’re basically the same as last year. So there’s less than 1% chance that Stricklin or anyone else will be able to convince him it’s totally not working after the season.
I think you are correct. A couple of week ago I posted that the real question is whether BN actually "walks the walk" or is it more of "talk the talk" as he disciplines and sometime fires players for not living up to the set standards, so the question is does he hold himself accountable. Any objective review finds his performance as a game manager, OC, QB whisperer as severely lacking so make the transition without ego. If he does not then the tenure will be short and back to sunbelt.
