When my wife was like 13, her parents accompanied her to the fair in WP, and her dad rode that with her. He’d never been on it and panicked. Started yelling stop the ride, I’m having a heart attack, etc. The entire ride, filled with kids her age, stops and paramedics storm in. Of course, he was fine. She, on the other hand, was mortified and still talks about it.

Was born in ‘80, so I missed that era. We had our own quirks in home design that would make a separate, great conversation. But sadly, I never got to sit like a Saudi prince in one of those pits.

For some reason, when I see those all I can think of is having a martini with scantily clad women all around, and at least one person in the room that despite his friendly demeanor is actually angling to kill me.

I had a grandmother that lived in Ocala growing up. Between the drive, the fact that at the end of said drive I would be in Ocala, and that exact type of bathroom setup, I loathed visiting her. That seat is padded. Zero doubt in my mind.
i rank loathing a visit to granma's house up there with Philly booing Santa Claus. They never took you to Silver Springs or Juniper Springs in the ONF?

A NASCAR race decided by cars going three wide on the last lap down the back-stretch dodging tires and other flying debris with a photo finish to win the Daytona 500.

Such an anti-climatic finish yesterday.

Silver Springs several times. Juniper twice. But that was my parents. My grandmother—with whom I had other issues anyway regarding her divorce from my grandfather—only took us to places like yarn stores and the “beach” at Lake Weir with a broken pipe spewing water that they called a water park. It sucked and I still hate Ocala to this day as a result. How does these alway turn into a discussion about me?

Also, the Santa snowballs story has been explained multiple times.

Since Ocala was mentioned.

Six Gun Territory is lost to many generations. The dude "falling' off the roof during the shootout was always a hoot.

Some folks do keep the memory alive.

The old tourist traps on 301/441/27 between Ocala and Belleview. Ocala Caverns and the Worlds Largest Bull.

A lot of the time when I drive to/from Gainesville, instead of taking 10 all the way to 75 and down (or vice versa), I'll hop off I-10 just east of Tallacrappee and take 19 down to 26 and across to Gainesville... it's crazy the amounts of "pre-Interstate" stuff you see on 19, especially in/around Perry... still dozens of old one story motels, some empty, some repurposed to apartments.

The opening of the Suncoast Expressway from just east of Crystal River on SR44 down to Tampa makes 19 a pleasant alternative to 75 when coming and going to the deer camp in SWGA.

I read somewhere a couple of years ago (like 2-3 tops) that they might actually extend the Suncoast all the say to I think Thomasville... When Son #1 lived in Tampa, Suncoast was well worth the tolls the 2 times we drove a Uhaul truck... there were literally no other vehicles but us. I'm always a nerd looking these things up... I always always recommend them to foreign friends coming to America for the first time that want to drive around America, not fly around America... always take the old roads, you see and meet and experience a different America. Here are 19 and 41
