I was very meh about Mullen’s hire when it was announced. The record vs ranked teams, the SEC record, the whole cousin Eddy vibe ( Mac’s aw shucks stoner routine made me vomit) made the hire feel like we sht the bed and panicked.

After yesterday I have to admit this feels like when we hired Meyer. I loved the energy getting off the plane. What other coach is chomping as he walks off the plane? The excitement he showed, the desire to show off the ring he won at Florida. All of that topped off with a presser focusing on relentless effort, a very Meyeresque phrase, and recruiting. Townsend’s reaction, recruits appreciating getting called the first day he is there, the simple fact we have sucked on offense since he left, etc it all reminded me of when Meyer started.

I hope I am right. But these past 8 years have me holding judgement until around this time next year.

It didn't hurt him showing off that ring at the podium a couple times to let the recruits see. I agree with you on his energy.

Exactly what I was thinking. Almost all of us feel this wasn't a home-run hire, but you can't really judge the trajectory of the ball until it nears the outfield wall. In a few years we'll know if it was or wasn't. In the meantime I think this was a decent hire given the circumstances and trust Mullen to build us an adequate roster while facilities are upgraded.

As far as the presser goes, I think he hit it out of the park.

The only issue with pressers is Mac crushed his and so did muschamp. Waiting to see actions. Offering players and making phone call is a good first step though.

I don't understand how anybody can see this as anything but a home run hire. He won 8 games a year at freaking Mississippi State!!!!!!!!!!!! We have been terrible on offense since the day he left! The most prolific offense in our history was his. You guys are nuts.

I think most people's point is that the real home-run hires this cycle are likely Kelly and Frost and that anything else is probably a "we'll see how they do" scenario. And I agree with them somewhat.

Just as we really can't judge a recruiting class until their junior year (when they are either getting playing time, have transferred, etc), in my mind we can't really call this a home run until we see a new HC's product on the field. I'll hold my call on that until the second and third year (second year is when processes/playbook are familiar with the players and the system is "theirs", and third year is when the new coach has enough of his own recruits on board and we can tell if the talent is getting better).

Love your enthusiasm, though! Feeling pretty positive at this point myself.

Here are the positives.
  1. He wants to be here
  2. He knows exactly what he's getting into
  3. He's familiar with Stricklin, so more familiarity
  4. He'll get our offense into the top 70
  5. Players and recruits seem to be alright with the hire
He's not a home run hire. He's a single into the gap. Now maybe he can get bunted into scoring position and eventually cross home plate. You guys really need to temper expectations.

I was bummed at this hire, it felt like it had the jilted bride syndrome , after the CK crushing blow, we hooked up with the first guy that smiled at us. I ranted for a couple of days, then woke up this morning and said, ' yea, we aren't tinnercee, gotta give him a chance'.

So reading your post, it excudes pumper out of every orifice. It inspired me to give cousin Eddie a chance. You are on corch's team btw.

:pumper: Go Gators :pumper:

Ok, I didnt like this hire and not sure if I ever will. I do have more respect for him than I did after listening to him more. Does speaking translate to wins? Doubt it but its nice to have a coach that doesnt cry every time the camera is pointed in his direction and for those who say its all about the money well thats probably somewhat true but at least we see some passion to win unlike Butters. I dont have alot of reason to believe we will ever actually win anything with him but I have decided to not complain anymore and I will hope and pray we can compete again. Go Gators! P.S. You have to admit the guy has some guts coming here after knowing half the fan base isnt on board....I think he actually knows the expectations here...

No he didnt. He sounded like a fool who was nervous enough yo pass out when someone asked him to give a surprise toast.
Honestly I probably should have gone back and watched macs again before saying that. But I do remember feeling like he nailed it. In retrospect it was probably ptsd from the muschamp years. Thus, I think yesterday’s presser doesn’t mean anything without action and results to back it up.

I think he wants to be in Gainesville, and I think he wants to win, and for that, I'll give him a chance.
Whether he'll take UF to the mountain top or not, :dunno:, but I'm willing to support him until I see otherwise.
One thing I believe I know is that he has more fire than McElwain, and that's dang sure needed.

I liked the fact that he sounded as arrogant/confident as Spurrier when he spoke (I did not even think Meyer sounded that sure of himself when he first arrived). The biggest thing with Mullen is, and we will not know until the middle of next season is, how good of a game prep/ game coach is he. There will no longer be the excuse that he did not have the access to talent enough to match up with anyone in the SEC now. So, if he really does go get 9-10 wins in year 1, we might all have to admit that he is for real as a major head coach. 8-9 wins will not be a terrible start, but questions will linger. 7 or fewer wins and the "noise" will already be ramping in the system in my opinion.

I think we will know the first time we play a team with a pulse. I think the tell will be does our QB look like he knows what the defense is doing and where to go with the ball. With Mac's teams you knew it was going to be a garbage game on the second drive when the QB looked like a deer in headlights.

What I got out of Muschamp's presser is he showed he had no plan nor any type of vision when he was introduced. The only thing he said is he wanted to run a pro style offense. We all saw how that turned out.

This is one of the reasons I'm the way I am.

Like when we hired Meyer? Will you pumpers police your own.
Not saying we hired Meyer. I doubt Mullen is winning us a National Championship. Just saying it felt like when we hired Meyer.

the whole cousin Eddy vibe ( Mac’s aw shucks stoner routine.
Well that part's a joke. that's the least of our concerns. I'm pretty sure no one really thinks he lives in an RV.

The rest are big concerns. his recruiting efforts, his SEC record, his inability to field an offense if his quarterback isn't a sledgehammer and inability tonutilize WR and Rb talent, both of which repeated itself at cowbell also. those are the concerns. Not Cousin Eddie.

In fact I think it's hilarious that he wears that sweater. at least he has a sense of humor and rolls with it. he doesnt get pale and freakout like Mcelstain, saying that the shark joke were attacks on his family.
