Donkey would rather us suck so he can complain and get likes rather than us actually be a decent football team.

hell at this point, I’m surprised he still considers himself a Florida fan

Yep. Swonkey is hypercritical ..... he might be as fierce as Saban even.

Whelp.

Yeah 2009 we were focusing a lot more across the country. But still two of our recruits were top five in Florida. We only had a handful from Florida that year. But we actually started focusing more nationwide in 2008. Mainly because we were the hottest program on the planet.

Honestly, that’s when things started to fall apart a little bit for us. Trying to stretch our self nationally when we should’ve just been focusing at home. Our championship depth was all from Florida kids.

2010, we decided to refocus again. We got 10 of the top 25 recruits in Florida.

here’s a breakdown of top 50 kids in Florida year by year.

2005: 10
2006: 14
2007: 15 AND 9 of the TOP 16
2008: 8
2009: 6
2010: 11
Just FYI
We had 6 this year.
Clowns 6.
scUM 9

WE WON THE STATE!!!!

The whole country would be 0-Fer on nattys without Florida players...so let’s just be honest about that...the thing that drives me nuts is you can’t throw a rock without hitting great football players around here...but it’s the kids that don’t play cause of home circumstances or the ones that can’t qualify at UF that hold us back and the one thing that Meyer seemed to get was backing to get the players in with character and grade issues to be the alpha dogs...the reason Dan keeps pushing the Top 10 school angle is he knows he ain’t gonna have backing from the higher ups to elevate the football program and it’s sad but true...you ever see these top level kids turned away at Clemson OSU Bama? Most of em sound like they couldn’t solve a critical thinking problem at a fifth grade level but they sure can get a degree in sports management or AA studies (whatever the hell that is)

In comparison see below. I’ll edit Myers years with number of top 20 as well.

2013: 13 (6 top 20 // 8 top 22 // 5 top 15)
2014: 8 (1 top 20)
2015: 3 (2 top 20) - TRANSITION
2016: 5 (2 top 20)
2017: 8 (Mac’s best class)(2 top 20 - #17 & 19)
2018: 5 (0 top 20) - TRANSITION
2019: 8 (2 top 20)
2020: CURRENT YEAR - 6 (2 but maybe 3 of top 20)

We absolutely did in his early years. The 2006 class seemed like we got every Top 25 kid in Fl, outside of Patrick Robinson. 2007 was similar.

Without looking it up, I'd say we started losing ground a bit in the 2009 class as we became more global and fsu began gaining traction again.
Do you use rivals? I might be looking at it wrong but thinknit says he was ranked #37th?

There are like two kids in the top 50 that cant qualify at UF and we have a verbal from one and are trying to get him qualified.

There is certainly no evidence but I wish I could hope that he could.
One can hope as one wishes. I think you will be less frustrated and, therefore, happier if you accept his inability to recruit. We can still hope around the edges, i.e., slight staff changes, improved facilities resulting in better recruits, gradual on field performance resulting slowly in gradual improvement in recruiting, etc.

I don't know. Surely we can do at least as well as scUM, right? And better than Clowntown with no coach? Right?

If we had six of the top 25 too, it would have been a damn good class. We actually had several of those guys at one point.

Im fine with preferring in state kids (or at least south eastern kids from big known schools) vs some perhaps slightly higher ranked kids from somewhere else (Washington, Cali, etc).

We should do better than the CoCaines, but you and I both know we shouldn't be surprised. I sure hope Lamar Goods turns out to be an absolute stud, because it appears that he and his CT competition were a priority over Pinder. I just don't see why we would prioritize a low 4 star kid from CT over a solid guy from Seffner, who have two guys in the FL top 50 (WR & DT)

I just spent 30 minutes catching up on all of this (had a deposition in Florida on Wednesday and have been completely out of the loop).

After watching Mullen's first 3 classes, I think you've hit on something: yes, he wants the top kids just like Clemson, Alabama, UGA, Ohio State and all of the other big boys....he makes a pitch, and so far has missed on most of the superstars. He's landed a few solid/high 4-stars (such as Dexter, Wingo, Copeland, Gouraige, EJ, and a few others). Where he needs to improve is hitting on the Plan B's & C's. Last year we only signed 1 DT - he should have had a couple of Plan B's waiting in the wings. This year: WR & RB. I'd much rather land a DT (in 2019) that needed a year or two to develop than completely whiffing. I'd rather see us take a 3-star UCF WR than whiff. I think that's fine with 2 or 3 of your takes in a 22+ member class - now if he was doing that with 8-10 kids it would be a problem. I'll give him a pass on year 1, but year 2 & 3 we've seen big gaps at certain positions.

The good thing is next year there are only a couple of big "needs" (WR & RB). It will be the first time in a long while that we can take a balanced class vs. loading up at certain positions.

Glad to see you back in the loop.

Every position is a big need every year. You want to be playing upperclassman and not forced to rely on freshmen at any position.

You take 11 on each side because even the bluechippers will fail at probably 50%.

I'm in shambles until we get a top 5 class. Then I''ll be cautiously optimistic. But it ain't happening until 2-3 assistants are gone.
And the whole landscape will change when players can start signing endorsement contracts. Then all that will matter is $$$s.

Absolutely agree. Due to the sh*tty earlier recruiting and holes from Butters years we need OL's last year - we needed DL's this year (and WR's). The roster will finally be - mostly - balanced and there's no need to load up on any one position (but I would like to see 2 RB's next year and maybe 4 WR's).

You recruit 22 then use the final 4-5 spots to fix needs. We keep creating more problem positions by completely skipping positions each year.

What's crazy to me is most of those guys were busts. But I guess signing busts is owning the state. Point taken.

About half will be busts.

About 90% of 3 stars will be busts.

People tend to rate "busts" differently, ie a 4 or 5 star who starts is a bust if he isnt all SEC but a 3 star who play sporadically like Trey Burton arent.

In the past, transfers were usually guys who failed at their previous school. Now, highly rated players are transferring because they didn't play like their coach promised. Cox transferred to us because Smart made promises he couldn't keep. The portal changes everything.

This is the smartest & most insightful comment made on GatorChatter in 2019.
