I harp about exactly that. We block the WRs when running routes would be more effective, as it ties up usually a corner and a safety, or if they dont honor the route you throw instead.If you are saying that CDM doesn't even use long routes to occupy the safety, then wouldn't that be the story? Why carp about short routes when major incompetence is evident?
We did a thing breaking down all the options and rpos in the USCJr game. There were only a couple of verrical passes in the first half.
Do I literally mean there are NEVER passes that arent sideways (4 yard route and 20 yards sideways is a sideways pass)? no. But when you start the play w the LBs knowing you are throwing in front of them it makes there jobs so.much easier and they cant really get burnt even if they cheat vs the run. It also allows the safeties to cheat in the box.
The frustrating part is he knows how to call a more wide-open game but he doesn't occasionally, usually in the fourth quarter when we're losing again.
