I think his biggest advantage is DEPTH. Many teams field 4* and 5* players...How many teams have a 4*- 3rd string?
4* and 5* depth lets the coaches sit players who are not doing what is wanted or expected. We've kept playing OL who whiff repeatedly, and safeties who lose coverage, etc, because the next guy up is just at a lower tier. The coaches know it, and the players know it.
It also allows more substitutions in Qtrs 1,2 and 3, so your guys are fresher in Q4 than the opposition which doesn't have that same opportunity.
Better ingredients make better pizza. You need cooks (er, coaches) too, of course.
