Will be back at the Hatch Mon or tuesday I'll give it a try and post a follow up.
I’ve seen them several times offshore around buoys. Never really had anything to try and catch them. The one I did catch was from my great uncle’s dock across from the coast guard station in Jax. Floating live shrimp between docks and kept getting my bait stolen. Put on a small hook and a tiny shrimp and when that float laid over I set the hook like I was possessed. Damn line starting screaming off and the fish jumped. I didn’t know WTF it was until I got it next to the dock. Could’ve broken me off several times as it would lay up under the pylon barnacles until I coaxed it out each time. Had to beach it. Took about 15 minutes.

All ways heard they were great fighters but have never caught one. I was on my way in from catching rock bass when I passed a crab trap with a fish about the half the size of a trash can lid with its nose right up against the float. When I got a good look the fish was laying on its side instead of how you see most fish in the vertical position. I said holy sh!@ but didn't have any live bait, it was still fun.

Those small hammerheads were likely bonnethead sharks. Catch a ton of them at the mouth of the St. John’s in the spring while flounder fishing around the jetties. I think they only get up to about 15 pounds or so. 2-3 is about the average size.
I thought it may be that too but wasn't sure.

Anyone ever catch triple tail?
Saw two hanging around crabtrap balls but couldn't get them to bite.
I have never caught a triple tail (my favorite eating fish), so who am I for giving advice. I have discussed techniques with the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory specialist and I have watched a guy who knew what he was doing catch them. Sometimes tuna or mahi mahi werr caught between research stations on a research cruise and were always shared in a feast. But when the vessel captain saw a triple tail under debris or in a buoy shadow, he stopped and caught and kept him himself. I am told that the best method is a live shrimp free lined and lobbed gently into his vicinity. The experts tell me they must be enticed very gently.

My buddy caught a 15 1b tripletail at the Steinhatchee inlet fishing a live pinfish under a small cork next to a channel marker. If you see them again and are casting to them sightfishing, I would lose the float and just put a live shrimp or pinfish in front of them with a small live bait hook.

We used to free line live shrimp and pinfish around the can buoys off Canaveral whether we would see them or not and do pretty good on them. Most were 2-4# but I would warn anyone using pinfish to wait until you feel them pulling off line before setting the hook....I watched an absolute monster(had to be in the 15# range)swim out from under one of the can buoys and eat my free lined pinfish only to set up on him too quick and pull the bait out of his mouth :banghead:

Triple tail are my favorite on 12lb test with a small circle hook...no weights no bobbers and a free spool...don’t set the hook until you see line stripping and then hold on

There's probably not a better all around boat for Florida than a 22ft Bay boat. We have some spots where we like to sight cast Reds in 6-8 inches of water(Lagoon) that takes a minimal draft skiff but other than that there is really nothing you can't do in a 22ft bayboat. Even cruising with the family or pulling tubes and such are possible...nice boat

For sure a good all around boat. Had a 23 Sea Hunt before this one but we can do so much more with the 22 bay. I run out 20 miles on a good day or go in 15 inches of water looking for Reds.
