FSU, offensive line coach Greg Frey part ways
FSU, offensive line coach Greg Frey part ways
TALLAHASSEE -- Florida State has moved on from offensive line coach
Greg Frey.
Coach
Willie Taggart announced the decision to part ways with Frey via a statement on Friday afternoon.
“This morning I informed
Greg Frey that we are moving in a different direction with our offensive line coaching position,” Frey said. “I appreciate the hard work and expertise Greg brought to our program and understand how important it was for him that FSU be successful. I wish Greg and his family the best as he continues his coaching career. We are working to fill this position quickly.”
Frey, a former FSU offensive lineman, was with the Seminoles for one season as an assistant. He joined the staff last offseason, coming to FSU in its first year under Taggart after working as Michigan’s offensive tackles/tight ends coach. FSU's offensive line was among the worst units in college football this past season as the Seminoles struggled to run consistently and protect its quarterbacks. Frey, however, was dealt a tough hand as the Seminoles lacked true tackles on the roster and the position was hit hard with injuries.
A native of Clearwater, Frey graduated from FSU in 1996. He was part of FSU's first national championship team in 1993. He's previously coached the offensive line at USF (2000-06), West Virginia (2007), Indiana (2011-16) and Michigan (2017) before returning to Tallahassee in 2018.
This move marks the third departure of a coach from Taggart's original staff that he put together last year. Offensive coordinator
Walt Bell took a job as UMass'
head coach in December, and
Alonzo Hampton was
dismissed as FSU's special teams coordinator in January. Additionally, Taggart brought in
Ron Dugans to coach wide receivers, moving
David Kelly off the position (Kelly is still with FSU at this time, although his new role has not been specified.)
With Frey gone, FSU is expected to quickly fill the void at offensive line coach. The most logical choice for a hire is
Randy Clements, who is still listed as the offensive line coach at Houston despite the fact a new coaching staff has came in and another offensive line coach (
Brandon Jones) has already been hired. A source tells
Noles247 that Clements was still with Houston technically as of earlier this week, but he was not actively in the office. Clements is a logical fit because he worked closely with FSU offensive coordinator
Kendal Briles in stops at Baylor and Houston.
The terms of Frey's buyout are not clear at this time, because an official contract is not available. A Freedom of Information Act request to FSU for contracts of each FSU assistant coach in January returned contracts for each assistant on staff, aside from Frey. Only a Letter of Agreement, signed last January, was available. In the agreement, Frey signed a two-year contract worth $650,000 annually, but there was no language regarding a buyout.
