I think it's time to evaluate whether Dan Mullen is the guy or not

For those many of us who were extremely disappointed the day Cousin Eddie was hired and thought we knew what we were getting, well this season has kind of been it. Forget the numbers, forget the records and just watch the entire big picture, etc. etc. Last nite was the microcosm of the season. The team has been playing worse and worse and worse almost on a weekly basis. Sure we have a good offense, but most teams do and most teams have a terrible defense. But some of the "good" teams can get a stop against decent teams on occasion. We can barely slow a horrendous offensively challenged team and there has been ZERO improvement. Hell Vandy was able to move the ball against us without much trouble. We played terrible against a ZERO dimensional offense in KY. We played horrendous against UToothless and true frosh QB. Yet the excuse makers were there "Well we held UK to 30 yards in the 2nd half". Yes a team who has ZERO offense took 2 hours to figure it out. "well without those 2 700 yard drives by UToothless they would have no yards" Exactly. The game flow and game management by Cousin Eddie will never change. Those innate qualities are not changeable.

If most of the fan base longs to compete at the very top, then Cousin Eddie is the worst type of coach we can have. With a Zoooook or Muscrat or Butters it was so obvious you were never going to be even close, that Stevie Wonder could make that call. But you have to really watch, assess and look under the hood to see why we can't win with a Cousin Eddie type. He would have those few wins at Cowbell and then it would be punctuated with the South Ala. losses etc. The 9 wins on average and an occasional double digit win season and then a slip to 7 wins will keep the admin probably satisfied. But for those who want the mountain top (fans) it is a nightmare b/c you are swimming upstream b/c the admin can't see beyond the 8-9 wins.

I’m also not totally sure he’s making the call next time.

Who’s making the call, surely won’t be Fuchs.
If it’s the boosters, how much money will they continue to dish out to replace coaches?

Mullen is about the best option right now, there’s no other Saban’s out there. Even though I’m not pleased, I’m happier with Mullen than I would be with Pruitt or Leach.

A really good DC, and a few more defensive studs changes things drastically.

we don't come up a little short in recruiting we come up a lot short.
This X1000...Did anyone notice the "physical look" of the 2 teams last night...One looked like a true P5 CFB team, all 54 of them....the other a mismatched collection of CFB and juco level players...
I said it a couple of weeks ago that we are 3 or 4 players from being just like the rest of the SEC East....which is no better than 3rd or 4th best in the West.

Butters wrote his ticket Jan 1st on national tv saying the administration didn't back him and the football program less than 10 minutes after winning the outback bowl. The death threats shorted his stay by games not years

at least that earth pig ripped Kelvin Taylor and Malik Davis for boneheaded plays. ****ing Dopehead Dan acts like he didn’t even see Marco do it and then goes on to whine about having to play more games. ****ing crybaby should go coach at the G5 level

I think some on this board have said it, freeze would be a home run hire if we could keep him away from the hookers. Or at least give him a burner phone so he doesn’t use his work phone

Freeze should have been hired when we hired Earth Pig and or Mullen.

obviously I hated Mullins as a coordinator about as much as I hate Grantham today. it was a terrible fuuchsing hire, born of desperation, and frankly having just no other options from our athletic departments perspective.

as much as I hated Mullins even when he was our offensive coordinator wasting talent and wasting plays, I found myself liking him better than I ever thought that I would.

it's hard to just forget the numbers because the truth is if he wasn't such a ****ing idiot he has the ability to see the holes in the defense and pick them apart. but then like clockwork he returns to option football. Like a bottle full of mother's milk.

when he came out this year and used stuff I'd never seen in his playbook and was scoring a bunch before halftime, that guy can win a championship.

when the noise got so loud about Choking Dwag being ChokingnDwag, it seemed as response was try to tone back the offense, rest the defense more as if scoring less in the first half is going to make Grantham better. obviously Grantham isn't any better and scoring less just made every game tight.

it's maddening because he does have the ability to be a champion he just doesn't have the heart.

Firing Grantham would go a long way and certainly help his chances of having a future here. I just don't see it happening.

If Mullen wants to make a statement, we will be hiring at least 4-5 coaches this off-season.

I really don't want to waste the money.

nothing's going to change Dan Mullen. he will never recruit well enough to be a champion he won't hire good enough staff to make up for his recruiting.

Grantham isn't the problem, Grantham is a symptom of that Mullen being the problem.

Mullen needs to take a page out of Spurrier’s book, when coaches under the HBC didn’t get the job done they were sh*t canned immediately. Also blaming the offense for the loss is piss poor, the offense put up 34 points, they may not have been perfect but is he saying the only way we can win is if the offense plays a perfect game. It’s time to stop covering for the major malfunction on this team and that is the defense and the fat f*ck bulldog running that part of the team.

He wont. Period.

he like sharky is happy with where we are.

why wouldn't he be happy? he's probably going to get a million dollar raise and another extension.

I see the point you are making but we can agree to disagree. Those innate qualities of being horrendous at game management in so many ways are where his abilities are lacking. Those will not change. Not having the heart to axe an entire staff and bring in competent help from film room to recruiting to coords., well that part is heart.

mans that’s exactly why this program is going nowhere anytime soon. Raises for coaches who don’t deserve it and a staff that thinks winning the mythical sec east is an accomplishment

oh I know his inadequacies are not going to change.

it's just the frustrating part to me. Chimp there's nothing elite about that guy. Butters cant be elite. all he knows is conservative screenpass, draw play, play action, short crossing route that's all he knows. so conservative that Saban decried not being able to get him to open up the game plan, and and about him being too predictable. Butters cannot pick apart a defense even if he wants to.
most people cannot.

Mullins can when he wants to. he has the ability to be elite at times. He can do like he did at the start of the year when he must have grabbed a little bit of Spurrier playbook.

The sad part because there's playcalling talent there. there is a little ember of elite play caller, but he just smothers it.

Found this just now. Don't know if it's already posted or not but it's worth reading again either way.

people act like any of this is new.

third and Grantham has always been third in Grantham.

Granslum equals an opportunity lost. I don't care how bad the defensive personnel are. When things go this far South, the buck stops in one of two places, either Granslum or Mullen. I'd prefer to see Granslum clean out his desk today, followed by an armed escort out the building. Id prefer that Mullen get another year. Then we'll see.

Of course, none of what I prefer will happen.

Of course it's not new and Mullen had to know this was out there on Toad. I'm not sure what Mullens expectations are any more but I am questioning if he has the will power to make the moves necessary to get to championship football if he even knows how.
