When a new coaching staff takes over, fans can expect plenty of changes in the coming seasons to the roster, and most of the turnover occurs in regards to pivotal backup spots. The Bengals are no exception to this, and Jeff Driskel fits the bill of a player who’s days may be numbered in a transitional period.

Roster Odds
It is doubtful Cincinnati will part ways with Finely, so Driskel has his work cut out for him the rest of the way to securing his spot. If it’s a close battle with Finley for the backup spot, the Bengals may give it to Finely anyhow and cut Driskel to keep an extra receiver or defensive lineman.

Who knows, maybe Zac Taylor likes the idea of keeping three quarterbacks already since Driskel does have actual game experience to lean on now. If Dalton were to go down, the coaching staff may feel more comfortable trotting out Driskel over Finely.

That is all if Finley starts struggling and makes it clear Driskel should be the first man up if Dalton goes down. Driskel’s best hope is that he plays extremely well, and that Finely struggles enough to waiver the confidence of the coaching staff.

Even then, it could come down to a numbers game, and Driskel could be left on the outside looking in. This will easily be one of, if not the toughest decision to make come cutdown day.

Roster odds: 50 percent

***That's actually higher than I expected. The field of QBs you can sign for depth that didn't lose the Browns twice has to be HUGE.

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Heading into training camp, which began on July 27, I projected the 53-player roster when it's finalized on Aug. 31, which can be found here. The following is an updated projection at the midway point of the preseason (note: tackle Jonah Williams is likely going to miss the season after having labrum surgery and guard Alex Redmond is suspended for the first four games):

  • Quarterback (3): Andy Dalton; Ryan Finley; Jeff Driskel
  • Running Back (3): Joe Mixon; Giovani Bernard; Trayveon Williams
  • Offensive Line (8): LT Cordy Glenn; C Billy Price; RT Bobby Hart; RG John Miller; G/T John Jerry; G/C Trey Hopkins; G/C Michael Jordan; T Andre Smith
  • Wide Receiver (7): A.J. Green; Tyler Boyd; John Ross; Alex Erickson; Auden Tate; Damion Willis; Cody Core.
  • Tight End (4): Tyler Eifert; Drew Sample; C.J. Uzomah; Cethan Carter
  • Defensive Line (10): DT Geno Atkins, DE Carlos Dunlap, DE Sam Hubbard; DT Andrew Billings; DE Carl Lawson; DE Jordan Willis; DT Ryan Glasgow; DT Renell Wren; DE Kerry Wynn; DT/DE Andrew Brown
  • Linebacker (5): MLB Preston Brown; OLB Nick Vigil; OLB Jordan Evans; OLB Germaine Pratt; LB Hardy Nickerson
  • Secondary (10): CB William Jackson III; CB Dre Kirkpatrick; S Shawn Williams; S Jessie Bates III; S Clayton Fejedelem; S Brandon Wilson; CB B.W. Webb; CB Darius Phillips; CB Davontae Harris; CB Tony McRae
  • Specialists (3): K Randy Bullock, P Kevin Huber, LS Clark Harris
  • Subtractions from pre-training camp 53-man projection: G Christian Westerman; WR Josh Malone; CB Darqueze Dennard (projected to begin on Physically Unable to perform list); LB Malik Jefferson; S Trayvon Henderson; CB Jordan Brown.
The Skinny: There are some tough decisions that will have to be made and injuries to Green, Ross and Dennard muddy the picture even more. Here is a position-by-position reasoning for the selections:

Quarterback - Finley has probably already solidified the No. 2 spot at the position, but he has never taken a snap in an NFL game so keeping Driskel would make sense, especially if he shows some value as a wide receiver and as a special teams performer, which I think he will.

In my minds eye, I see Jeff breaking behind the safety, sprinting into the open and dropping the perfectly thrown pass. As he shuffles to the side line with head down, the announcer raves about his athletic ability.

Well, Dipshyt didnt play tonight vs Giants. The second string job is sewn up. He I guess, if Bengals even keep another QB, is behind a rookie who has a QBR of 132 to Dipshyt's 30.

He should be firing up and that resume and applyimg to a BassPro.

As bad as is, Id take him over my jags backup. At least Driskel can throw the ball past 10 yards. We drafted LDR to be our backup...AND THEY LOVE HIM.
The staff keeps bragging about how smart Minshew is. Fine, make him a coach. But, get someone who can actually make some throws.

Rarely have I seen such hate for a player. If Driskel was tragically killed, you would openly celebrate here and probably taunt his family.

It is very odd to bash a kid that tried his best. I guess some folks just age, not mature, as time moves forward.

The guy has been nothing if not perseverant. You have to appreciate that.

Yeah, I don't change much, on anything.

If you're going to be good at something, you have to practice. I've got this ass thing down and I'm going for the gold.

Bengals' Jeff Driskel latest QB-turned-WR experiment

AP18330855577231.jpg

For now, quarterback Jeff Driskel has a spot on the Cincinnati Bengals roster. It's just not the one he wants.

Tuesday's practice saw Driskel, a 2016 sixth-round draft pick by the 49ers, take the field playing a position he's never competitively played in his life: wide receiver.

Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing in at over 230 pounds, Driskel possesses the sort of traits that he and the Bengals coaching staff believe could make him a contributor in more ways than one.

"I'm still competing at quarterback," Driskel said, per The Athletic's Jay Morrison. "That's what I want to be. That's what I think I can be. But I just want to show that I can add value to this team in other ways and show that I want to contribute and can contribute."
I say good for JD. Make NFL jack all he can. 3rd string QB-TURNED-WR 3rd string WR. Whatever it takes.

But when I recall his HS highlights they were unbelievable. Damn.

Easily. Driskel still panics and looks at the line as soon as the ball is snapped. It's the kind of thing that an average QB breaks in middle school.

It's why he was good for 4-6 turnovers in any game that mattered even at directional Louisiana and how he managed to do the unthinkable, lose twice to the Browns.

I don't know if he was stupid. He just got tunnel vision on the field and had no ability to look beyond the first receiver. Plus he was the only qb I can remember who couldnt see defensive rushers coming at him from front side.

He was garbage. He threw for 1000 yards and ran for 1000. Cum talked him up and scouts listened back then. He was never anything more than a runner who took snaps.

But other than that he was pretty good.

I'll never forget some of his high school highlights seem like he was on fast forward in the videos almost like a video game. That never panned out in college unfortunately.
