This and the Meyer/Saban analogies just don’t apply. Frost was a star Nebraska QB that won the national title after being born and raised in Lincoln. It simply wasn’t comparable.
He still made the lesser choice for himself and UF, but we also treated him like he was worth half of what we eventually paid Mullen. What exactly had Mullen proven at that point to show he was worth so much compared to a guy that got UCF to undefeated in 2 seasons after being a total disaster?
Well, again, we walked into the whole search like Mike Dexter in "Can't Hardly Wait", high-fiving people, arrogantly disregarding anyone we considered to be lesser candidates, and just expecting for people to lay down if we took the time to fly to them. So in the end, we were stuck and the chubby girl with the whale tail, that we'd never even imagined being the target, suddenly had all the control. I think if SS had gone straight to Mullen, we would've paid less. Don't forget, Taggart actually had his agent issue a statement that he had no interest in the UF job. Add that to the other debacles, and here we are.
As for Frost himself, nearly every successful coach I can think of went to a small, nothing school. Spurrier and Swinney are the only names that come to mind. Yet each of them make the business decision to go where they feel they'll have the most success. If Frost had still be in Oregon and would've had to literally pass Lincoln on the way to UF, maybe there's an argument. But he was already here. I bet he'd sat in the living rooms of numerous players that were also offered by UF. There was such a compelling argument for why the UF job just made the most sense for he and his family. His leaving Ucf and driving by UF to go to Nebraska was the worst move in college sports history.
