Win 7 is going to be around for a long time. To me, converting an 8 or 8.1 system would be a higher priority.

If you’re on Windows 10, congratulations! You’re already running Microsoft’s latest and greatest OS. According to them, Windows 10 will be the last version of Windows, and will instead receive feature updates over time.
Starting from August 3, Windows 10 users will be able to download the Anniversary Update, which includes many new features to play look forward to (not just boring security updates!) One of its headline features is a full Linux-style Bash command line in Windows, perfect for geeks who love to work via the command prompt.

Well, I agree. However, I did update my Win7 and Win8.1 machines. I prefer 7 but I'm a cheap bastard. My thought was a few years down the road, when MS is selling Win15 and Win7 isn't being supported anymore but Win10 is, I will wish I had upgraded for free. I hate paying for Windows because I could live without it but my kids love their video games.

FWIW, the upgrade was totally painless. Surprisingly painless, even with my Win7 machine that had a linux dual boot setup, though the GRUB still sees the Windows partition as Win7. It was actually easier than just initiating a new system out of the box has been in the past. I know, I know, some claim is should be called Windows 8.2 or whatever but they definitely did a better job of getting the bugs out.

I can't say that I notice any performance differences one way or the other though. I hear that it is more secure. I hope they are right.
Well, I think that is a bit confused. It isn't a Linux-style command line, it IS Linux, or more accurately apparently some compatibility layer for Linux. It is incredibly interesting in theory, yet most of what I do in Linux, like everyone else in any other OS, is browsing and the occasional word processing. It seems like it would still have all the Windows safety concerns though. I prefer Linux because it's safer (little to no virus concerns), more stable (doesn't crash ever), and because it's free. Running Linux through Windows destroys my first and second reasons for running it. The other thing I use Linux for is fixing Windows problems (especially disk problems) or bypassing Windows security (easily I might add, and I'm a completely untrained novice).

I wonder if it will allow access to Linux program libraries? I imagine a few small utilities would be all that interest me. Can't imagine wanting to do that within windows.

I just saw all of this stuff, and don't recall you ever contacting me. Your screen name can easily be changed. Just let me know what you want to do.

Anyone here get the Win 10 Auto Correct loop of death? Happened with one of my office machines yesterday. I let it run overnight to see if it was a matter of loading security updates. Hope it's not a hard drive failure.

Clean install about a month and a half ago. It's still looping. I got an issue.

It sounds like a hardware problem to me. Do you have a Hirens.BootCD? They have a good memory test on the cd.(MemTest86).

Not familiar, but I assume that's to interrupt the loop and make the machine bootable? I obviously can't test the drive until I can get into the machine.

This won't fix the loop problem but it will help check things out. Microsoft has come out with several fixes for the loop.

You boot the Hirens CD from your CD/DVD drive. Assuming you have a CD or DVD drive, you need to make sure your BIOS is set to boot from it. You can find it at the link below.

            http://www.hirensbootcd.org/

You can also get a USB version if your computer doesn't have a CD/DVD drive.

Which is easier, USB flash or CD/DVD?

Hey, guys, thanks for the input. It's definitely worth a shot before I determine the next step. It's an older Dell Optiplex that isn't vital to the office and which is probably nearing the end of its useful life. I do have to say, though, that it's been a durable little machine.

It's got a couple windows password busters on it. I had to use one the other day. Five year old granddaughter locked my wife's laptop. :lmao2:
