I find myself oddly conflicted about staying. On the one hand, I pretty much check in here minimum once a day - and on some days over the last year where I was recovering from some medical procedures, spent hours on this site And I’m fortunate to be in a place in life where the $60/year won’t be an issue.

But I keep getting bothered by the thought that a “lifetime membership” wasn’t what was advertised. It shouldn’t bother me - because I completely understand and sympathize with Ox’s reasons for doing this -but it does……….Ah, what the hell, I’m sure I’ll get over it; I’ll stay.

I agree with several other posters who think something needs to be kept in place for new folks to see at least some of what goes on here. It really will be the only way to get any new members.

FWIW @oxrageous I agree with you on the porn issue; no need to clog up this place with anything more risqué than what’s currently allowed in the Saloon - no shortage of other sites for that across the WWW. As for the curse words, I would leave that as is too. There’s plenty of ways around the filters and the whole “Fuchs” running joke is still amusing.

My question is, what's the pay off? Is it just more of the same or is there a plan to make this site better?
Why does it have to be one or the other? Couldn't a subscription model live along side an ad based model and they simply be separate "tiers"? Subscription version gets access to VIP threads (like stickied threads) while ad based model doesn't....they just get bombarded with ads  Hell you could have 3 levels, with a middle level not accessing VIP threads, but does away with the ads with a price somewhere in the middle.

You'll have to ask him. Our talk was preliminary at best. But it was a talk. My own opinion is, yes, tiered pricing for tiered content.

There's a lot of merit to this. The only downside is the effort it would take to wrangle all of the people, levels, payments, and access.
Pretty sure it wouldn't be overly difficult to set up the framework of the website...Xenforo is a pretty robust forum framework. If he wants to run it like a business (have revenue), well that requires some work doesn't it.

Depends on how much you’re willing to pay to see what you want to see. People pay big money to see other people’s feet.

I don’t get it…
Maybe a quick dose of what you’ve been missing will change your mind. There’s more where this came from.

I always knew the low lifetime subscription rate was too good to be true. Kind of like when the top defensive mind in college football came here as HC and hired the top NFL offensive mind to be his OC. Who could ever beat us with that dream team? Sadly, my dreams, as well as all the sideline coolers Cheeseburger Charlie Weiss sat on, were crushed. I’m in though, even at the cost of a six pack of Zima a month it’s still a good value!

I remember finding this place after coming over from the old site years ago - I was happy someone was crazy enough to take the task on. I think a small fee is perfectly appropriate to ask relative to the amount of time I imagine goes into running and moderating this board. Besides with the train-wreck we're looking at for the next few years we're gonna need a place like this.

I guess the reneging on "lifetime membership" doesn't bother me because I never took it to really be a "lifetime membership". The economics of the whole thing just didn't make sense... if there are maybe a couple hundred people paying 50 bucks one time? Ox can blow that $5-10k on zimas and prostitutes real quick.

The challenge is that once money changes hands, expectations of the site can change. Hopefully most of the great voices on here will remain.

I think the cussing restriction should be lifted when we play the leg humpers.

I misread and was kind of under the assumption that non paying guests couldn’t see our posts. Especially if drinking is involved during posting. If we ever go the UK route I’m toast. The $60 felt like a retainer.
