I was there for the first one with LSU and felt that it should have been "one time" or "special occasion only"... until Saturday night. With the new lights in the stadium, at night, it was pretty damn cool... the fact that we were pushing their schit in physically and looked like a near "complete" team (yeah, I'm looking at you Special Teams!) might have been a factor as well.
This is my position as well. One time, and I was there, great. Since, has been forced and often right before we absolutely backed down. But, at some point it becomes a thing of its own and events like this past Saturday sway me and lock it in. If we are being honest, even We are the Boys is hokey as shyte and is not terribly exciting and I've sung in well over 100X since 1994.

It's grown on me and is now a unique event in college football worth keeping.

Diddo.

It looked and sounded wicked on TV and matched the Defensive efforts in the 2nd half (entire game really).

It absolutely seemed silly with last year's defense.

It's growing on me.

It will tie in great with our defense next year, for sure.

Like most similar traditions, they're fun and look awesome when you're winning. When you're getting your doors blown off? Not as much

@soflagator can you find the Costanza clip where he talks about how he grows on people like a commercial jingle (as his strategy for dating a girl)? Annoying/hate it at first, then find yourself humming it, then end up liking it? It worked for George, this is kind of the same thing.

@jdh5484 yeah, the Defense (and even offense Saturday night) goes a lonnnnng way to selling it.

EDIT: FOUND IT!!!

Like Rush Limbaugh's black producer kept everyone off his back? Lets face it, Petty's days as an American icon are numbered.

I have to agree that this new tradition carries one hell of a lot more weight when we're winning.

I like it.
What are we talking about?
Never been a Petty fan, and the song just lacks energy in my opinion. It sounds cool when the crowd is singing, “heeeeey, baby!”, but the “won’t back down” part tapers off to a slow quiet sleepy joe downer IMO. And it’s the kind of song that a hopeful school would sing, not a confident powerhouse.

Just my supremely valuable opinion.

Add to that the fact that Petty hated Gainesville and out elite University and we really should quit the song.

I totally agree... I've always felt that they let it run on entirely too long...

was at both those games… if you want something funny, I can send you my video from Saturday of Won’t Back Down and you could isolate my normal tone deaf singing accentuated by my end of 3rd quarter blown out voice… it’s pretty pathetic!

Nice job. And I was able to locate myself - well, my I-phone anyway. I was pleasantly surprised to see some that some of the Tinerc folks appeared to be singing along with their cell phones lit.
Made a joke on Twitter (first tweet is in the Takes) that you can tell where the UT fans are because most weren't lighting up their phones. CLT Gator on Twitter told me that Tennessee only has landlines, and then I remembered that on rocky top there "ain't no telephone bills". That's how you tell who is actually from Tennessee.

This is gonna be in the irrational/“off my lawn” realm but who TF decided it was a good idea to start adding OOH AHH to the singalong?
It bothers me too.

I think the first year was somewhat rough, the ST specialists made it a joke against Carolina in 2018 when we were down by a lot (but came back so a lot was forgiven) but 2019 FSU is where I knew it could be good. At night, kicking the crap out of the Semis and you could here the crowd singing it loudly after the sound was turned off. The biggest failure there was not blasting it immediately after the play (I believe a FG) to start the 4th. Like fade it back off and the roof would really come off the place (figuratively).

That said, this year, under the lights, its a whole new level.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I kinda like it. According to my son, the students like it. If he's correct, then I'd say it's here to stay (at least until the woke police go after Tom Petty). Any of you guys with kids at or recently at UF here anything differently from your kids?

 listen to all the music critics in here :snob:

Every silver lining has a cloud I guess. Geez, the sight of the crowd belting that song out has become one of the greatest sights in college football, and we're talking about composition and energy flow.

I like Won't Back Down, its the "Ooh Ah" that bothers me. The same way (though not to the degree) as when I'm at an Orlando City game and UCF fans yell "Knights!" when singing the Star Spangled Banner and it comes to "Gave Proof Through the..."
