Were Mac's critics right?

All these zen masters

Dude really? Are you really this near sighted that you can't see the approaching downfall of the football program? We recruit like ****, can't win games against top tier opponents...no wait......can't stay in the stadium with them and our offense is stil HORRIBLE. When we get the shyt kicked out of us opening game next year in Dallas I hope you start figuring it out.

I consider myself unlucky because who wants to be right about your head coach not being the right fit.

At this 2-year point we've seen enough of Mac to know how he operates, coaches, communicates and relate that to the results we've seen on the field. Most of us have enough knowledge of football to know what we're looking for and what we believe are red flags. I'd love to think otherwise at this point but I'm convinced the man is in over his head, was hired for coaching skills he doesn't possess, cannot communicate his message effectively and is an incredible dumpster fire in recruiting. One more season, then gone. At least Foley isn't here to fukup the next Gator hire.

Amen, especially the Foley part.

Right, because everyone knows you make a real sound evaluation of a coach, with a winning record mind you, after a little under two years....
You're blind if you can't see it's not working. Screw the two years to evaluate. It's been nearly a disaster in every respect. If he could just recruit, we'd have some hope. There's really no silver lining here unless we're talking about the fact that we could possibly land a big name coach if the A.D. plays his cards right.

I hope I'm wrong and McElwain has some major turn around. I do like this staff's ability to evaluate talent with high school kids. Callaway, Reese, Scarlett, Hammond, Swain, etc. That's the only glimmer of hope. If Nussmeier turns into a different person by some miracle next year, then maybe we have a chance.

I have reservations about Mac, and for me, next year will really be the "proof in the pudding" year. But weak east or not, someone has to win it (I prefer it to be us and he has won the East two years in a row, he went to LSU and won a game no-one gave him a chance to win, there have been SOME recruiting wins, he got the administration to move on the facilities. To me that is not clear indication that he is and will be a failure. I can reasonably argue the starting AA for the bowl game and I can see the starting the freshman point. They are both valid and it depends on your opinion, but dont be blinded by your opinion to dismiss starting AA as lunacy.
Lunacy, good word. I will admit to that. Also, idiotic, moronic, imbecilic,....As far as blindness goes, I truly hope you're right but I think the Hawkeyes are going to prove I'm right.

There were very strong indicators during season 1 to lead one to the conclusion that Mac was not it:
1. The on-field performance the last half of the year. Not just against Bama but the lesser squads that we just barely beat.
2. His refusal to change anything on offense. I never did buy what some posters said about you not being able to change offense mid-year. Good coaches adjust. Maybe the adjustments work, but good coaches try. Trying is important, even if failing, because it sends a message.
3. If 1 and 2 didn't convince you, then the bowl game prep should. When Mac let seniors and early NFL prospects sit out practice, he treated the bowl game as an exhibition game, send the message to the team that some games are less important than others. Do you really think that Saban, Meyer, or other great coaches send that message? The crappy bowl game performance can also have an impact on recruiting, not the loss, the crappy performance.

I think both you and I tried to hammer this point home after the FSU loss last year because we both agreed that letting a midget drop back and try to pass 50 some times in that game was one of the worst coaching decisions I've ever seen. KT had over 100 yards rushing against them and although we wouldn't have scored many points running the ball at least we wouldn't have gassed our defense going 3 and out plus losing field position with all of the sacks we took trying to pass the ball......It was a very winnable game at home and in front of 40 some recruits....yet we repeatedly did the same thing that never worked. Now I'm not one usually for playing primitive style offensive football by running 90 percent of the time but it was obvious our only chance to win. It was at that point I knew he was lost and in way over his head.

Do you think we have re-established coach authority and Team in the football program?

I do not think we have completely. Believe we have made some in roads with Mac(took it further than Chump). This has been the nail I hung my hat on.

I never said or tried to indicate that I'm a better fan than you. It seems to me that you're saying that if you give up and lower your expectations, then it won't be as painful when we lose / perform poorly. Detaching yourself from the performance of the team saves you from the pain. I get that.

Tell you what, you give up on and complain about the current staff (of course hoping for a better staff soon) and I won't crack on you. I'll root for success with the current staff as long as I can and you can give me a break too. Deal?
That's not even close to what he said, like 180 degree opposite close. But we get it, you see what you want to see.

See why do you have go and call me names and hurt my feelings? I could say the same about your position. Help me see that my position is so out of touch with reality by giving me an example of other programs that have fired a coach after two seasons of a winning record because "they just didn't see it going right". Heck Texas held on to Strong after two years of losing and middling recruiting.

I was not questioning you on definition but on when/where intransigent. Was it going with Harris and trying nothing new as the offense imploded last year? Was it failling to keep Grier in the fold. Was it his failure to get on of the true frosh ready, this year in case both QBs were injured or not ready?

Some have argued for starting a true Frosh in the bowl game. Better would have been to get a true frosh ready and some experience as soon Del Rio was hurt the first time. The reasoning is much the same, both Trask and Franks are unlikely to stay 5 years, etc. UF had a 38 point lead on UK heading into the 4th quarter so one of the Frosh QBs could have played the entire quarter and gotten experience.

I guess really it could be all of those instances and after you decided the first time each additional instance reenforces your view. I guess I pretty much agree.

I was the 1st to say Mac was not the right guy the minute he was hired, I was hoping I was wrong because I hate seeing is lose but it's clear I was correct about him. I didn't think he'd be this bad but I never once thought he was the right hire

Every coacing hire has risk. I think there were plenty of people who worried about this hire from the time he showed up on Foley's radar. Among the reasons were:

1. Lack of trust of and the track record of Foley in football hires

2. UF has never had much luck with UAL guys particularly ex-UAL assistants.

3. UF fans do not want a program that emulates the 1970 or 2010 or 2015 UAL program.

4. McElwain did not even have the UF job on his buyout.

5. McElwain had never even won a division at CSU.

6. McElwain's "success" at CSU was in some part due to getting a top UAL RB recruit to go with him in a league where the kid was clearly more athletic than most of his opponents.
