Navet, you probably remember that was the year the Tangerine Bowl, the pre-cursor to the Citrus Bowl, was moved to Gainesville because they were renovating and enlarging the stadium in Orlando. The game pitted the Miami of Ohio Redskins versus the Florida Gators.
Miami of Ohio went 10 - 0 in the regular season. The Gators were the first SEC team ever to play in the Tangerine Bowl because at that time, 1973, the SEC teams thought the Tangerine Bowl was beneath them. The stadium down in Orlando wasn't very big and the pay out was not big enough, but the Tangerine Bowl wanted to develop into a bigger bowl game.
Darn it if Miami didn't come to Florida Field and beat the Gators. And yes, it was perhaps the coldest college football night ever in the state of Florida I remembered that, but I went back and reviewed a little of the history of the Tangerine Bowl. To top it off Gator fans got something of a kick the next year when the Tangerine Bowl returning to Orlando again featured Miami of Ohio playing the Georgia Bulldogs. You guessed it. Miami won again. So the SEC wanted no part of Miami of Ohio. Miami went to the Tangerine Bowl again the next year making it three in a row and this time they beat the South Carolina Gamecocks who obviously were not an SEC team back then.
