The other day on the radio (by I think Doug Johnson) it was brought up that we throw the ball laterally too much and not enough vertically. The reasoning being we don't have the right athletes to make people miss and go, but more the big WR's that should go get contested balls.

Here is a link to the other thread if you want to see what was written... http://gatorchatter.com/forum/main-sports-forum/70567-receivers

Basically we have two big problems on offense. QB and WR. I think QB is probably 1A and WR 1B. They can both help each other out by playing better. I think the key thing to realize is that the offensive problems are not 100% on Driskel... let's call it 65/35. The majority is on Driskel (bad decisions, inaccurate throws, holds ball too long), but there is definitely also the issue of when he does make a good throw.. we have receivers dropping the ball and that kills drives and rhythm.

When Grier or Harris comes in and these receivers "all of a sudden" become good, some of these posters should turn in their posting privileges.

Btw, with all the talk of how good the FSU receivers are, they were getting blasted for being crappy until Winston made them look all world last year. Good QBs make your receivers look good. Great QB's make your receivers look great. Pitiful QBs... well, you get the picture...

We have enough talent now that this should not be an issue. What happened to alvin bailey and chris thompson? We have bodies they just are not getting played.
JD also seems to have his favorites which are D rob and burton. rarely does it seem he looks elsewhere

Harris was pretty close to throwing a pick 6 last week. It's not ALL qb, but it's surely not everyone but the qb.

Yeah, I don't know why some of the other guys that shined in camp aren't getting PT.

I'll agree to that. The receivers definitely aren't playing well. Due to reasons that we can only speculate. But QB play has been utterly dreadful. And I think that impacts the WR play.

Those lateral throws have been a point of contention with me for a long time. We constantly throw the ball 30 yards to gain 4 yards. I just don't see the risk reward ratio being in our favor. I have never understood why we never, ever throw the quick slants to the slot or the skinny posts to the TE. All of our "bang/bang" passes require a long horizontal pass that gives the defender more time to adjust and make a play on the ball. And the play only works if the other outside receiver hits his block which....let's face it....seldom happens.

Dooley: WR's dropping balls:

http://www.gainesville.com/article/2...cles/141009622

Because I don't think I've ever seen a softer group of receivers at Florida.

How many times has one of them run out of bounds just shy of the first-down marker? Or have alligator arms on a pass over the middle? Or catch a pass for a first down and retreat behind the marker to try to pick up yards with moves rather than toughness?

So, the receivers should be benched for dropping passes? Because they're a main reason we're losing games? Your top receivers in the NFL routinely drop passes. And nobody's calling for them to be benched. I guess these guys are one of the main problems with their teams... Drops Leaders

If you ask me, the whole offense, not just the receivers have given up on Jeff. I don't know if it's because he overthrows the long balls nearly every time, or if it's because he has no passion to lead them, or if it's because he has big ears, but they definitely seem to have given up on him. When Treon came in against UT you could tell everyone on the offense stepped up their energy level and effort. This needs to be addressed by the coaching staff. You can't quit on your QB just because you think someone else should be starting. Do your freaking job no matter who is under center. It's the coaches decision who to play and who to bench, not the players!

GASP!

Wes Welker dropped 9% of his passes last year! What a train wreck! This is only a problem with the Gators, no?

Look at their catch to drop ratios. It's reasonable. We have receivers on this team with 50/50 drop to catch ratio and worse. It's not the same.

Obviously the QB's fault.

The percentage of passes dropped is much higher with our receivers than the ones you listed. But yes, if a receiver in the pros keep dropping passes they will surely see the bench or the unemployment line.

Agreed, but this also comes down to leadership from the QB position. I think we all agree that this is one of the biggest areas Jeff is lacking. He doesn't seem to have the confidence of his team. The reality is we all thought that even though Harris would make mistakes (like the bad pass against UT that was almost picked) he seemed to increase the energy of the team. Unfortunately, Harris is not available to play, so we need the WRs to step up and catch the f'n ball. It doesn't matter who throws it... you are a D1 WR at the University of Florida. If it hits you in the hands you should catch it. Robinson completely mis-judged the ball on the first INT from Driskel. I think Robinson is trying to turn everything into a big play vs. just catching the ball and then worrying about making somebody miss. I think everybody is trying too hard to be the "hero" because they feel the pressure from how stagnant the offense is.

It certainly seems like that. It might also be a locker room problem. It will be interesting to see how they perform in the LSU game.
