Stoops is clearly bad, but the point about Mullen is many can see his scheme is flawed in that he can't win unless he has superior talent, and it appears he is unable to adapt or grow.
He got the golden ticket with this job and it was his chance to re-invent himself, to step back and be more of a CEO, hire a real OC, bring in (and keep) elite recruiters. Instead he just went the MSU East route, so to expect anything other than MSU results is simply wishful thinking.
At least Stoops is smart enough to realize he's not smart enough.

SOS had a Heisman winning QB, Meyer as well. Look at the talent Saban has had. Nothing special about Saban's schemes. Just recruit better than everyone else and you win.
In other words everyone depends on superior talent.
