I keep hearing people talking about how excited they were about losing most games that mattered last year because we were at least throwing the ball around. (Well, throwing it around 54% of the time and just KILLING our drives with options the other 46% of the time.) Admittedly, I liked it to. And if we hadn't immediately 180'ed, the receiver and QB talent in the southeast would have loved it to.... see how quickly Kiffy is getting looks from top talent at fuchsing Ole Miss.
Remember during the FSU game in 2019 that Mullinz "bragged" to ABC (it was Jordan Rodgers IIRC) that one of his assistants, later identified as Brian Johnson, asked him why we KEEP running stupid fuchsing options that don't work. Then Johnson got promoted to OC, the offense changed (really the play selection changed, we have all those levels plays and 4 verts in the playbook, but Mullinz typical only runs them once a half).
THEN Dwagtham was getting crushed on defense as teams tried to keep up with Johnson and Trash, so Dorky Dan switched back to increasingly ball control option offense and back to sideways passing, and the three game triple faceplant ensued.
People are worried about "losing" ground gained, whatever that means. The easiest solution is to flush the OC /HC that sucks and give the good OC some time. He will be cheap, he was one of our best recruiters, and he already knows the players, playbook and how to expand it into something that actually scores points, though obviously we don't have a passer as talented as Trash on the roster now. (I was actually quite impressed with young Kitna throwing the ball around though. I thought he was walkon quality, but I don't believe so now.)
There were numerous insider reports that Mullinz had lost the lockerroom last spring and summer, but Brian Johnson kept it together and got the team back on the field including those that wanted to sit out (like Mullin mostly did).
There are no homerun hires available no matter what we were willing to pay, and continuing down the Mullinz path will just lead to a worse and worse roster for the next guy. Yup he is very risky. So is every OC and every 21-17 (McElwain) or 17-21 (Mullin) little league coach out there. Yes, he will probably fail, as will every other option on our lists.
Let's face it, we get points for hiring a minority. Probably recruiting points too.
Now is the time.
