Well assault and battery are the reasons he should be arrested. The reason he probably won't be is that he did it as part of a football game. If he did this to say his English teacher at school what might have happened?

He or she would immediately correct your use of might, insisting instead that may would’ve been more appropriate here.

Running back on the field like he did is not part of the football game.

The kid couldn't man up against the smaller ref and do it face to face - he hit him from behind.

Navy guys and Liberace both agree - attacks from the rear are most dangerous.

This.
Hitting someone when uniformed and in the normal course of play is part of the game. Yes, even after the whistle hits wouldn't be legally considered assault & battery (it's something to be punished within the context of the game as a penalty and/or ejection).

But once a player has been ejected from the game, they are not an active participant in the game and it's no different than if a spectator or fan ran on the field and hit a ref: it's assault and battery; and should be prosecuted as such.

I'm with Donk: the cops should've arrested his azz on the field in front of the full school and both teams.

 I'd love to see the nationwide rioting and looting after the cops arrested this kid on the 50 yard line.

He should never be allowed to play organized sports again. Period. This is one you don't come back from. The referee was actually injured - this kid hit him as hard as he possibly could.

Ehhh....

Assuming this hypothetical teacher wasn't actually deserving of battery I think it's far more likely that he or she would have corrected the use of did instead of had done given that might is appropriate in the past perfect tense.

He should be in jail. Tried, then sent to prison. Are the prison leagues considered “organized sports”?
