How do we fix our defense?

Grad transfers will be big this offseason.
That's one of the few things Mullen does exceptionally well on the recruiting trail.

Just wish he'd seen the glaring need to find a Greenard and Zuniga replacement this offseason.
I don't think we have any seats. Remember this year doesn't count against eligibility. You could have guys like Stiner coming back. We are actually at 80ish this year with 23 or so cruits so far. Ive not really hear how many total seats we will be allowed due to this weird wuhan waiver. surely at most it is 85 plus 25. Even so, we are full. (All 23 are counters and the Clemson RB will be a counter. Only one more counter at most.)

Idk the answer to the question, but it seems all the former top dogs in the SEC have forgotten to play defense. Florida, LSU and Bama. Ole Miss scored 48 on Bama. Our defense is pure ****, but, there aren't many teams playing defense this year it seems. Clemson and UGAly have had real defense this season with Clemson being well ahead of everyone.

Yep.

Grantham’s stupid scheme is a gimmick that literally everyone in college football has figured out.

Dan has doomed himself by shackling the team to this **** show.
Yup, just like the air raid under Mike Leach. Ok, you got a W over LSU who also hasn't played a link of defense and then. . . Can't score like we can't get off the field.

When we get a team in 3rd and long what should we do? We seem to give up like a half dozen of those a game. I can’t believe we can’t be more successful on 3rd and long than we’ve been, even with the personnel we do have.

For the love of God if I see any of our current safety's on the field next year I'm gonna blow a gasket....
Here's a question with a most probable answer.....if we lose another game(only conference games this year) do we say f vck the redshirts and give the younger guys a bigger share of the reps? We've played freshmen in key roles for the last 15 years on defense and although they weren't super effective they came back with fire in the ass the following year, Haden & Wright from the secondary, J.Davis and Morrison as LBer's and C.Brantley & Bullard from the dline come to mind...

Why not at this point, you still got 4 games to play these guys and they can still redshirt. Not really sure why you wouldn't at this point, unless your just an incompetent staff.

Your second sentence kinda answers the first. Unlike Meyer and Strong or even to a smaller degree Chump/Quinn our current staff just isn't very good at evaluating defensive talent. Sidehat wasn't either but he got left with some studs for his 2 years....alot of them were from the Chump/Quinn era and played early and often.

I'd rather watch young guys get burned or make mistakes than the current rotation of Keystone Cops playing LBer and Safety..

This....we do NOTHING to take the opposing offensive line out of their happy place. And a happy oline means a happy QB.....sometimes changing gaps(responsibly) or sending run blitzes messes with the heads of olinemen...screws up their coordination and forces some of their playbook shut....right now we aren't making anybody earn anything against us.

I'd love to see those moves. I will say it looks like there were a couple attempts yesterday at making adjustments w/ fresh faces (Humphries, Lang, and Tre'Vez).

We did play Humphries & Lang yesterday along the DL....and we still have Lee & Goods on the bench (one, or both may be injured?). We need to rotate Humphries & Lang regularly - at least 10 snaps each (especially since we're on the field 70+ plays/game). I'd like to see those two added to the rotation w/ either Lee and/or Goods - and if that doesn't work, move one of the OL's over for 5+ snaps/game (TJ Moore is a 4th year player, seems like a good candidate, or Eguakan who is 6'3-ish 310 or so). Something needs to be done to slow the run game and get pressure on the QB.

Just checking the other boards. About what you would expect.

Pumper Shangrila says we are still winning it all and Grantham is the top DC on the planet. This is Butters fault.

247 is what youd expect from a board with so many recruiting followers, Grantham killed himself with poor front 7 recruiting.

Here is some insight:

5 Star Recruits
2016 - 1 (Antonneus Clayton no longer with the team @GTech)
2017 - 0
2018 - 0
2019 - 1 (Chris Steele no longer with the team @ USC)
2020 - 2 (WINGO and Dexter) only one of those has seen the field
2021 - only 1 so far and he is a DB

Defensive Tackles
2016 - no DT's taken
2017 - only 2 and one medically retired. The other is Campbell
2018 - no DT's taken
2019 - only one (humphries) who hasn't smelled the field
2020 - 4 and they're all freshman

2016-2019 only 3 DT's signed and only one of them has played

Defensive Backs
2017 - 6 signed Henderson (NFL) Edwards (transferred), Stiner, Stewart, Davis, Wilson
2018 - 2 signed Dean, Huggins (dismissed)
2019 - 3 signed Elam, Steele (transferred to USC), Hill, **Kimbrough
2020 - 7 signed Wilcoxson, McDaniel, Pouncey, Rogers, Graham, Johnson, Helm, Torrence

Form your own opinion.

Stolen from Swamp Ass. The whole thread is good.

Film Room - Bad scheme in my opinion....

I would add inside linebacker recruiting to this shytlist. The LB list is so skewed bc we have so many Rush specialists on it.
