Liked the slide guitar in M. and Sons version but the harmonies in the S.& G are hauntingly good.
Old school my vote goes S & G
The harmony of S&G is hard to pass. Maybe @78 has an opinion

Rare song from the Heartbreakers where Petty is not the singer.

Wow... don't think I've ever heard Stan sing one.
Also... they even had Howie on bass at the time, who was almost assuredly high while playing that psychedelic song.

I've always been a big fan of Dan Seals and his version too...

"Love Is the Answer" is a song written by Todd Rundgren for his band Utopia. It is the closing track on their 1977 album Oops! Wrong Planet.

Although Utopia's version did not reach the music charts, a cover version by England Dan & John Ford Coley reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in May 1979 and spent two weeks atop the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.[3] John Ford Coley was quoted as saying: "Of all the songs we released as singles, that was my favorite. The song first of all had a classical base, and the middle had a gospel section which I loved."

Who has the better version?

So..
S&G approach 'blood harmony' status - I don't know if I've ever heard harmony so tight from two people who aren't related.
So I give the slight nod to the original, but... damn, M&S brings a great amount of energy and soul to it. Plus, it's also got a great crowd sing-a-long aspect to go with it.

@RiverRat I’m a big Dead South fan, I’ve seen them multiple times in person. Love their sound but that version just doesn’t compare to the original. Have to go with The Animals original and I know there’s a multitude of covers.
