I remember a game, back in the '80's I think, against a team from the plains of Alabama. Looked like we were done late in the game and our fans started bailing. But a banged up QB, dark locks and the popular "porn-stache" of the era, hobbled us back in it and we snatched victory from AU. Though more mobile, Grier puts me in mind of Kerwin. Let's hope he's remembered as fondly when his time in Hawgtown is finished. "Deja Vu all over again?" as the late great Yogi might say? Truly a learning moment for our fans in terms of what that team (and leader) was capable of. Maybe 30 years later, the same lesson will be imparted?

I was a sobbing 6 year old(brat, who are we kidding) for that game. The only thing that my mother thought might cheer me up was one of those little plastic footballs the cheerleaders would throw out in the SE end zone. Long and short, she takes me down ther and that TD and 2 pt conversion are some of my earliest memories of BHG. Ironically, I saw Nattiel on Saturday before the game.

Bottomline, we should never leave. Even being there, I've watched the conclusion of that game on YouTube or otherwise at least 25+ times. It's what we go to games for. The idea of leaving early and missing that would literally haunt me.

Nice post to put into perspective,

I guess I've been to a couple hundred Gator games in my life and not once have I ever left before the game was over. Never. I fail to see the point. You paid your money and took the time to get there why leave? To get home tens minutes earlier? Even when we were students and sucked we stayed to the bitter end and partied despite the suckatude.

I've given plenty of my opinions regarding the lack of student partcipation dating back to the Zook years. I just don't get it. It used to be that no bar or house party could come close to matching the party in the stands.

There is no excuse for not showing up for a 3:30 game. There is plenty of time to drink and be there. This is a lack of focus and passion on the part of those students. I'm glad to see some of the stands filled in.

The University has the technology to see if a block doesn't show up. I'm sure the scan tickets or ID cards or something and they should suspend any block that doesn't have at least 50% of its members show up or something like that.

There are probably real student fans who didn't get tickets who would have loved to be there.

It's definitely blocks that didn't bother to show up. I'm all for suspending block privileges for that crap.
They should cut the student allotment to about 1/2 of what they currently get...even in 09 when we were #1 that same section was empty for most of the 1st half. Sell those tickets to people that will actually use them.

Well I have never left early either, but it might be several hours earlier, not a small amount of time. I went to a NASCAR race and was very tempted to leave early it was so boring. The end was exciting, but we were in traffic for a long time.

I couldn't disagree more. The student section is part of what makes a college game special. If you make it smaller than you might as well just have a NFL crowd.

The students just need to become more passionate. We've said it a number of times.. as the academics increase it seems the sports enthusiasm decreases..

So if they are not willing to show up, then let others go. You see that the students are not into the game as much but are ok with them holding onto such a high number of tickets???

I think there are other things you do first to get the students to show up. Like suspend a block if they don't show. Improve the experience so the students are more motivated to show up, etc...

I don't think you give 1/2 the tickets away.

I think it's more a matter of students not buying tickets at all than students with tickets not going to the game. The way block seating used to work is that the blocks would rotate every game. One game your block might be between the 30 and 40 yard lines starting 20 rows up and the next week you could be between the 10 and 20 starting 50 rows up. I think that block that's always empty (sections 33 to 35 I think) is the last one to be assigned. That means if not all the student tickets are sold that section is always going to be empty unless those tickets are bought up by other fans closer to game day.

Students showing up late, leaving early and not buying tickets at all are the reasons for all the empty seats.

I was at that game! I was 10 or 11 years and was screaming my head off! Great memories...

Saturday was the second largest 4th quarter comeback in UF history.....right behind Kerwin at #1.

As for the fans, call me an old fuddy-duddy if you want, but when I make the effort and attend a major sporting event, college or pro, I stay until the bitter end. Example, having to sit through that 1999 SECC game.

So you would rather just have empty seats? Sounds like a better plan...

If cutting their allotment isn't an option then they should go back to the old way of letting anyone sit in those seats so the college kids can sell them

I was there on that side of the endzone with my dad and his best friend. We were there well after the game, then ended up at Murphy's Pub on 34th street, so they could drink and watch it on replay.

When I was a student, tickets could be sold by the students to the general public. Many students did this for extra cash. Even back then there many students that didn't go, but they would at least get cash for their tickets. But now this is no longer an option and the tickets go unused.

Count me in as well. 40 yard line, 30 rows up. I thought the stadium was going to collapse. Greatest game I've ever seen.

How is it possible to wake up today and be agitated or even disgraced?

The showing of our fans yesterday. Pathetic. We didn't sell out, but we sold out. In section four, people were leaving in droves with seven minutes left in the fourth. I made sure to give every single one of them my two cents. Awful. The Gators have to get better, but so do we.

I didn't read anybody else's response to your post...yet. And I agree. It was a shame.

But, I'm so glad they did leave because they left before "The Play" and missed seeing one of the best comeback games EVER in the Swamp. So to them I say, "good riddance". Not only in the game but as a future fan.

Just put a couple of stripper poles in the middle of those two sections. Problem solved.

As for the blocks, if a particular block is always the last to be sold and often times NOT sold at all then that block should go up for sale to the general public on game day. :exactly:

:chomp:
