I was doing some research that might sound a little pumperish, but the stats don’t lie.

Since 2017 if you track Mullen, Grantham, and Turner and if you give Mullen’s staff credit for developing the 2018-2019 team at MSU (not a stretch IMO), then collectively they have put Miles Garrett, Jeffrey Simmons, and Montez Sweat into the 1st round of the NFL draft. Zuniga and possibly Greenard could give our staff 4 or 5 1st round draft picks on the DL in the past 4 years.

Also in the same time span that staff developed a 1st round corner in Jonathan Abram (who was drafted higher than Deandre Baker FWIW), and now they have another in CJ Henderson. The defensive development that this staff has accomplished in the last 4 years is pretty impressive. It is no wonder that DL recruits want to come to UF right now.

Youre right the stats dont lie.

Grantham managed to make LsU punt twice.

And Ugly punt twice.

In the whole fvkking game, his defense succeeded twice. Such amazing garbage bc frankly Ugly wasnt even a good offense.

He is decent against all the other dumpster fire Will Muschump offenses we played though. Of course, so are Conf USA defenses.

LSU punted? At some point it comes down to the the Jimmies and Joes. Those two games were abysmal reminders of how far UF is behind elite in recruiting. I have much bigger gripe for Grantham’s recruiting over scheme.

A mere two injuries wrecked any potential scheme against Joe Burrow. How can you possibly succeed without pressure from Zuniga and Greenard?

Our front 7 got manhandled by UGAs o line. It was a physical mismatch. I think anticipation of that outcome is why we saw such an emphasis on dline recruiting this cycle. Why it took this long, dunno? Still waiting for the next Brandon (Spikes or Siler). Why does Grantham fail linebackers?

Florida's defensive stats in 2019

Scoring defense - 7th
Rush defense - 8th
Tackles for loss - 10th
Total defense - 8th
Red zone defense - 3rd
Interceptions - tied for 9th
Sacks - 3rd
First down defense - 8th
Fourth down defense 3rd

But fck him, he wore a red shirt one time and his face is always red so he must be a dwag plant.

I know I'm not the smartest guy around here but I can't wrap my mind around what a few experts keep telling us. Constantly we hear how the 2019 team was one of the least talented in school history and how Mullen and Grantham can't recruit or develop for shyt. So if all the players suck and the coaches suck how the fck were they ranked in the top 10 in about 90% of the defensive categories? I guess being ranked 40th in 3rd down defense and coaching at a rival for 2 or 3 years outweighs all that other shyt?

Had no idea @Bait'n Gator was a Grantham :nutswinger: He must be a relative, that’s the only explanation. Or he’s in his will. Of course he also lives in Georgia, so there’s that.

If you knew some of my real family members you'd understand accusing me of being kin to Grantham is a compliment .

No I think he's a big fat red faced fcker who probably kicks puppies and creepily leaves his eyes open during public prayers. But I enjoy his style of defense and believe 17 and 18 year old's will wanna play in that kinda style as well. I just find it odd with as bad as the program has been the past decade that's the hill most around here wanna die on. Let's give the Oline coach a complete pass for the shyt he's put on the field last year because Butter's couldn't recruit but **** that guy who's drastically improved the defense in 2 years with Butter's recruits.

Zuniga would have been a first round pick if he played his senior season. He didn’t. He has no chance of being drafted that high. He will go, at the earliest, in the top of the third round. As for Greenard, middle to end of the second round is the earliest he will go. The player to watch out for as a first round pick in the 2021 draft is Zach Carter.

Since this topic is about Grantham and defense, maybe we can discuss some other defensive minds?
We know that defense is not not just about coaching and schemes; of course it must include talent and recruiting--of which some coaches get the upper hand.
Some good names have been brought up, like Venables and Andrews, but the other that comes to mind is Woody Widenhofer--the DC and eventual HC at Vanderbilt.
He always seemed to give Spurrier problems.
Just wondering what you guys think of his scheme, because he really didn't have the talent advantage but he seemed pretty good.

Former Vandy Head Coach Woody Widenhofer Passes Away at 77

Former Steelers DC Widenhofer dies at 77 - National Football Post

Robert “Woody” Widenhofer, a former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive coordinator and Vanderbilt and Missouri head coach, died Sunday. He was 77.

Widenhofer, who was living in Colorado Springs, Colo., was in the hospital recovering from a minor stroke when he suffered a more severe stroke Saturday, his son Ryan Widenhofer told The Tennessean of Nashville.

“He had the biggest heart of any man I knew and loved his children unconditionally and had a lot of people that cared for him,” Ryan Widenhofer said. “He would have done anything for us — he stretched and stretched to do everything he could for us. Obviously, his career was very nomadic moving everywhere; the life of a football coach takes a lot of your time. But he was there for us as much as he could be.”

Anchored by their “Steel Curtain” defense, the Steelers won four Super Bowl championships during Widenhofer’s tenure as the linebackers coach (1973-78) and defensive coordinator (1979-83).

After one season as head coach of the USFL’s Oklahoma Outlaws in 1984, he returned to his alma mater and coached Missouri to a 12-31-1 record from 1985-88.

Widenhofer went back to the NFL and was the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions (1989-92) and linebackers coach for the Cleveland Browns (1993-94) before landing at Vanderbilt.

He was the Commodores’ defensive coordinator from 1995-96 before taking over as head coach and compiling a 15-40 record from 1997-2001.

Widenhofer retired from coaching in 2007 after three years as the defensive coordinator at New Mexico State. His overall record as a head coach was 27-71-1.

I feel like I need to be completely honest here. Given everything that’s going on right now and the subject which has dominated all discussion, a small part of me was somewhat excited to open this randomly bumped thread.

Read the thread I quoted. It mentions that Woody's D's gave Spurrier problems. You been drinking more than usual?
no I'm just not sure why you have difficulties posting germane items in threads

Granthum will do fine with better talent....and speed rusher that aren’t both injured all season

An SEC coach apparently agrees with you:

I also think they've got the best defensive coordinator (Todd Grantham) in the league," one SEC coach said. "They're not where they need to be yet (with defensive talent), but they're getting there. They're missing difference-makers up front, potential first-round guys. They just do not have pass rushers like they did a year ago, but maybe Grantham will generate it. That's a smart dude, now."
