Actually he said, “I don’t know why I did that. I just did.” He and his wife were married 72 years. She died a couple of months ago at 97. Quite a pair. Super fun and just loved people.

Another thing, this isn't 1986, when cars were buckets of bolts with crappy safety features, no power, and terrible brakes. Modern cars, especially the powerful ones, can cruise at 105 quietly, smoothly, and in total comfort. Modern braking systems are also incredible. Ever been cruising on the interstate, look down, and see you were going 90+ without realizing it? That's modern cars for you.

149 mph in a brand-new Porsche 911 on SR 710 just east of that thriving metropolis, Indiantown. The car belonged to Champion Porsche. I was delivering it to Reeves Porsche as part of a three-way dealer trade involving Brumos Porsche. 1979.
As I went to pass a dump truck easily going 80 mph slower, the effer began drifting into the oncoming lane of the two-lane highway. Why I have no idea. I swerved into the opposite shoulder to avoid hitting him. I started to fish tail in the gravel. The unequal weight distribution of the rear-end 911 wasn’t helping matters. My mind flashed to the Brumos service manager. He once told me if the rear end of a 911 ever got loose, don’t hit the brakes. Lay on the gas. Counterintuitive but it probably saved my life.
It all happened so fast.

I just drove from San Antonio back to the NW a couple weeks ago. New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming and Idaho all have 80 mph speed limits, thank goodness.
Oh, and top speed for me was 145 in a Trans Am back in HS (1982). I wasn’t driving, but I think it was more scary that way. Felt like we were dodging parked cars.
I drove my 70 Chevelle up to 115 once, but never came close to 100 after that.
Nice! I see it happened in 1982, but what year was the Trans Am? Are we talking Smokey and the Bandit or Knight Rider?
My friend's dad was a used car dealer, so I think it was an 80 or 81, so likely more Smokey than Kit. This was probably it - dark metallic blue.

Plan? What plan???...although I did run the toll booth 'cause I didn't have enough change to pay...The US Navy was pretty tight back then...
Another feature that mine has is a nice trip computer that automatically resets a few hours after you turn the car off.
There's an expression in business that you improve what you measure, and I'd say that measuring my commute time every day certainly contributed to me driving faster.
In life, change is inevitable, except when approaching a tollbooth.
