What were Auburn's star-ratings when Malzahn turn them in his first year ?

I am not sure but I remember reading a lot of their starters had been recruited by Malzahn when he was there so he kind of had a good situation player wise to run his system when he returned.

My concern with McElwain right now is that he's recruiting like he's still at CSU. As usual you can't count the first recruiting class for a coach that just got here. But every time we've had a coaching transition they killed it the second year. I've never seen us take this many 2 and 3 star kids. Winning will help his cause but I don't see him making a huge turn-around this year like Spurrier or Meyer did in their second year. And since he's filling up with average players it's going to make each following year that much tougher.

My concern, exactly.

They won the MNC, Mahlzan left for one year and came back and played sow for MNC after they fired Chizik.

Honestly, IMO if we would have backed the brinks truck up to the dock for Saban, I still don't think Law would've been happy.
No, I didn't want Saban of course. But I'd like a guy who has at least won something, maybe even say a division championship if not a conference championship. Of course, even those guys (Mumme and Donnan had won many championships) don't always make it, but you increase your odds a lot.
Maybe he's taking 2- and 3-star players because most of the 4- and 5-star players are already taken. Muschamp left this place in a bit of disarray. I think it's early to evaluate McElwain as a recruiter.
McElwain is no hotshot recruiter. He never was. His strength is knowing what he wants in a type of player and developing them. Let's hope it wasn't all Saban.

I'd take any of our current RB commits over another 4 star scat back like Chris Rainey.

Bama is stocked with 3*s right now. The majority will be 4*s at the end of camps.

Regardless of how good of a recruiter he is, the perception of the program hasn't been this bad in 3 decades . Also, I doubt any of these kids watched any csu football the last few years and the Alabama teams were known for their defense. These kids just aren't familiar mac and we're just gonna have to pretty much take what we can get until we prove something on the field.

Spurrier wasn't a good recruiter either, and as we know he didn't need to. That's what Nussmeier and Shannon are around for. Mac's recruiting for the Florida Gators now. That just made him all that much better.

Bama has five 3*s and seven 4*s.

We have ten 3*s. A bit heavy for sure. After camps it'll change to around five 3*s. I was worried about a month or two ago but the staff has really been hounding and recruiting top recruits. We're still going to get quite a few 3* recruits because we will be taking in a very large class and truthfully it's going to take a year until the recruits see what we look like and the staff gains the full confidence of the high school coaches. Randy Shannon has had a huge impact in South Florida. I fully expect us to bring in one or two 5* recruits and around fifteen 4* recruits.

I expect a better process and a much better more cohesive staff and somewhat team will produce better results. If these are so much better to result in many wins is yet to be decided.

The home stretch in recruiting, like every year, is what will determine how Mac's second year will be, If he closes like his first year, we'll do real good. The staff killed it last year for the little actual time they had to recruit, if he hadn't landed some of those 5 stars we would have given him a pass for pile of shhiit that the dawg had left him and the abbreviated time period. With a whole year to establish relationships, Shannon with his Florida contacts already, we'll land a top 15 class minimal, show some fun and improvement (almost impossible not to do) on offense and we'll land a top 10 class.

Miami is second in the recruiting rankings right now. Their class is made up of 20+ 3 stars mostly from south Florida. Al Golden has a roster full of 3 stars from south Florida. Randy Shannon recruited a bunch of 3 stars from south florida when he was coaching Miami. Is that what everyone really wants? For us to become Miami North?

It's what you do with the players once they arrive on campus...not what their ranking is. UGA has recruited as well or better than any team in the country the last decade and what do they have to show for it? Texas is another example. LSU comes to mind as an underperformer, as well, based on the talent they've had on their roster. Hell, WM had the most talented defense in UF football history and didn't even win the division. It all comes down to coaching.
