Muschamp Authored Article for Campus Rush About How Things Will Be Different at USCe

Yes I know - not ANOTHER Muschamp story! But this one is a little different. He wrote it himself.

http://www.campusrush.com/will-muschamp-south-carolina-gamecocks-second-chance-1886164630.html

Is it just me or is this really weird? Football coaches, especially at the Div-1 level, have always struck me as guys who want to maintain a certain aloofness to preserve their leadership mystique. Even Mac only shows his hand so much even when he is sharing his goofiest "Macisms". In fact, I think his homey goofiness is a well crafted tool that he has cultivated specifically to make him more approachable while still preserving his position of authority and stature as a leader.

This personally written article, however, to me has a very different vibe that seems to border on desperation. Maybe I am just being biased (ok - I admit I am totally biased), but this comes off as trying too hard. I think it may be the first person perspective that gives it this vibe because he is personally sharing the kind of stories that usually you'd find in a memoir or a Facebook post. It therefore comes off to me as if he is trying to convince his detractors that he is a survivor who learns from his mistakes. Though the stories themselves and even the overall message isn't really that out of the ordinary, per se, having Muschamp write them makes everything come off as almost a plea to be liked by his new fan base and maybe college football fans in general. It also ultimately kind of reads like he is really trying to convince himself.

For instance, this quote was priceless:
"Another strength is my emotion. I'm a competitive guy. And I believe that a player takes on the personality of his coach. I want our players to be focused, on and off the field—and yet, there's nobody in this world that likes to laugh more than I do. As emotional as I am, I don't get lost in things. Nick taught me that. He impressed upon me the importance of being technical in extremely good and bad times. That really stuck with me."
That borders on delusional based on what we've all seen from him at every coaching job he's had.

Seems extremely weird for a coach of a Div-1 SEC team to have penned this directly especially when entering the first season as head coach at a new school and even more so when following a coaching legend like the HBC. (Can you imagine Spurrier writing this? :eek4:) Seems he could have easily gotten a seasoned media specialist to interview him so that he could provide the same insights while still keeping the reader at arms length. I know, if I were a USCe booster, this certainly wouldn't breed a bunch of confidence in me but, again, I am admittedly biased.

Thoughts?

P.S. I searched the site and didn't see this posted anywhere but I still offer my apologies in case I was "search challenged" and this is redundant (and I forgive anyone who may post it after me if I was indeed first :)).

He may never pan out as a head coach but he is obviously a tough mofo. If he ever gets a good OC and continues to coach D(and/or recruit it) like he did here he may do better than many think.

I too couldn't help but be somewhat impressed with his apparent pain threshold and drive to play. However, recovery from an injury is way different than recovering from a failure as a leader. Recovering from an injury depends predominantly on a person's drive and will to succeed where as leadership ultimately depends on cultivating that same drive and will in others. That's why this came off as weird to me because it was almost too personal especially for this stage of his career at USCe when he is still just getting started. Maybe I am just an old guy who remembers football coaches as being guys who were all about establishing an intimidating presence so this just seems way too touchy/feely for me. Millennials may totally embrace this in which case he really may have better results than people are expecting (assuming he also learns that offense matters).

That's why I was curious what others thought because to me, though the content isn't really an issue (outside the paragraph I quoted anyway), the tone and the odd fact that he wrote it himself struck me as being potentially counter-productive at this stage of his run at USCe.

Yeah, he's already on the hot seat. This is one spectacularly unpopular hire. I'd say he has less support than Zook had day 1 at UF.

Meh.........He talks about controlling the things you can control. And what will be his eventual failure is he cannot control himself, period. But rather explains away why he is so competitive, emotional, and so on. A good HC has numerous traits and can control most all of them. Mustank is playing like the kid on the playground that no one likes, and he's going to try and take your lunch money. He has too big of a chip on his shoulder and it will be his undoing.

I agree. That's why I found his remarks in the paragraph about his emotions so odd. Seems he doesn't fully comprehend how unhinged he comes off to everyone else when he has his tantrums. I also saw little evidence that he remained in the moment gamewise when in the midst of one his aneurysm tirades. It made me wonder who he was writing this article for in the first place. I don't think Saban or Meyer would have written this and Spurrier definitely wouldn't have because none of them would want to appear that vulnerable in such a public forum. All of those guys are old school coaches though and maybe this really will resonate better with millennial players. Doubt it will with boosters though since they tend to be very old school in nature.

Responding to one post : I think Mac's Mayberry spiel-act is his ploy for keeping all those
"none-of-your-business" reporters off their drive = uncover something to expand on negatively.
They laugh and are re-routed off their search for an "over-reveal" or locker-room bulletin-board
material. Mac's just plain crafty.

Thanks for sharing. I've never despised him like many here. I also don't think he's a complete waste. Without re-hashing the contents of this message board for the last 3 years, I agree with stephen that if his team's offense can ever get going, he could surprise a lot of people. ...and I find that there are parts of him and his approach that are likable. I do think his lack of emotional control are problematic and will continue to be until and unless he can get a better handle on them. Also, I hope he never wins against UF on the field or in recruiting, but I welcome him to beat UGA and UTin.

I've dug plenty already in this comment. I'll put down the shovel so you can all beat me with it for not hating and mocking him.

Well, Muskdank knows that now, pre-season, will be the only time-span he can make grandiose, positive
statements about his team.

Also, I think he believes, in seeking his next HC job, that while his record will say "Don't hire !", maybe his
PMA-quotes may take centerstage to get him hired by mistake.
Mac is a pro, while Mushstank is a con.

Our players did not look like they were having a good time under his regime, and I damn sure know I hated watching the cluster **** he fielded on our behalf.

I think the deal with AR and others is old guys just cannot muster all that hate you young guys can, I never got the lingering hate for RonZ or especially Urban, People fail sometimes, even in high profile positions. SOS spoiled the sh#t out of this fan base or filled it was so much arrogance it became to smart for any AD or coach, By the standards now John Wooden would have been run out of town before he won his 10 National TItles. I reserve my hate for teams in red or piss yellow or creamsickle orange.......
