This is good point. More often than not, these guys that win alot of games at mid majors don't translate into solid p5 coaches. I'll give some examples of some group 5 guys that flopped.Fuchstarded.
The problem is defensive (Zoom and Dunce) and conservative guys (Shark or Mullins) not whether they already amassed a 21-17 record at Colorado State or a losing record at Cowbell.
We dont need some west coast Fresno state shtt or Gardner Webb trash.
Three of the current four elite coaches were OC hires with no experience.
But stupid people keep repeating stupid shtt

Just to name a few but it clearly doesn't translate, atleast very often. Maybe Gus Malzahn coaching at Arkansas St for a year if you wanna call his stint at as a HC at Auburn a successful one.
But if you look at UGA, Clemson, OSU, Oklahoma. All hired top level assistants. Those 4 and bama are the elites right now. There are no Sabans on the market that I know of. My point is that there's not one true contender right now that hired their coach from a mid major or took a mediocre power5 guys and became elite.
I've put forth the proposal that all coaches should get paid on a per-win basis moving forward.Yeah, the entire profession is full of average guys walking around with millions in the bank. ... The whole market has become a disaster with these salaries. It simply attracts people who like to do the job, and love the idea of being a multi-millionaire whether they're great at it or not. We're rewarding those guys instead of making them earn it. It just begs them to get comfortable and put it on cruise control.
That’s a good point. I never actually thought about that. That trend has definitely changed. I still don’t love the idea of getting a first time HC, but the minors-to-majors experiments have been disastrous of late.
The one thing that uga, OhSt and Ou did was they had a fairly seamless plan. All three involved a guy retiring and turning to an in-house coordinator or firing a successful head coach, knowing exactly who they wanted and were definitively going to land before they made the move. In many respects, I feel like that was what we did in 2004. If we could pull something like that off, I’m good. Doing the USC, ut, fsu approach, especially with this band of bozos we have running it, no thanks. We’ll end up with those type of results.
I don't love the Zook example beings that he was a shcit coordinator. But yeah , I'm sure I could dig up more mid major flops too. That's why I'd have zero interest in Chadwell or fickell.
It’s Lane Kiffin, Lincoln Riley, Mario Christobal, maybe Mike Gundy (not sure he has the recruiting prowess we crave) and kick the tires with Ole Bobby boy.
There’s 4 on there I’d be thrilled with. And one that might have some serious questions… None regarding his mullet…
Tell me I’m wrong and I’ll think about shutting the fuch up. I likely won’t, though.
Smart is elite enough to beat the piss out of your boy Mullett in every way possible.Riley and Smart are not elite. .

I have to admit. My man crush for Gundy has faded. For that very reason you just stated. He a loser ,content with 3-4 losses a year. That and he's a prick that freaking leverages us for a raise every time we fire somebody.Cristobal could be a very good coach. If nothing else he’d kill it in recruiting so we’d be loaded. I don’t care about his FIU record, but agree with tgator he’s not some sure thing. I’d take him though.
Riley isn’t leaving Ou for UF. And Lane and Gundy are both losers. Lane because he’s a petulant child who can’t get out of his own way, and Mike because he stayed at OkSt, completely content being the little brother, knowing he’d never win it all. We talked about having a coach that truly hates losing. No way someone would stay in that spot accepting 3-4 guaranteed losses a year for a decade plus if he fit that description. He’s a better passing-offense equivalent to Mullen.
Many years ago I would have been interested in Gundy but there's another factor we havent mentioned. I don't want an old complacent multimillionaire coach. They all seem to get comfortable losing and cashing giant checks. It has to be someone with the fire to be a champion.I have to admit. My man crush for Gundy has faded. There's a rumor that Mullen has recently begun work on his own exclusive line of BBQ sauce....
Was Smart elite before or after he lost to Mullett?Smart is elite enough to beat the piss out of your boy Mullett in every way possible.

They are all disasters if you pick the wrong guy.I still don’t love the idea of getting a first time HC, but the minors-to-majors experiments have been disastrous of late..
