This defensive staff will probably turn over after this year. I'd like to see us get Marquand Manuel for DBs coach even though I know he is probably just an nfl guy. I want uf to hire some guys that are passionate about recruiting and selling UF to kids because they have been through it here. They are the success stories. Plus almost anything would be an upgrade on résumé alone on what we have now. Maybe we can ask Joe Haden if he wants to coach here if he is done with the nfl. Get a young-ish former DB to come coach us back up to that dbu rep. I hope for Marshall and Helm they get some decent coaching before they get a shot at the nfl.

Great post, Cover.

I used to look forward to a new Gators football season, but I can’t remember the last time I was actually thrilled once it started. My heart wants to believe, but my eyes know better. Muschump, Butters, and Dan have removed any notion of hopes for early season improvement. We always look the same… or worse. And I can’t get my hopes up about anything I saw last night. As my citrus farming uncle would sometimes say after a bad crop: “the juice just ain’t worth the squeeze”. Seems like it’s all the same at this point: young guys who are totally clueless on the field and somehow look even less talented than their rankings as recruits, veterans who have regressed, and more confusion on the sideline by a coach who still hasn’t figured out how to even try on the oversized shoes left behind by Spurrier and Meyer. What we saw last night just confirmed all of our criticism about Dan: he can’t recruit, his playbook produces a mid-level high school offense at best, and he sticks with poor performing guys for far too long because of… what? I don’t know. And don’t even get me started on Grantham. In fact, I don’t want to even hear people criticize Grantham. He is who he is: a failure on every level. But Dan hired him, and continues to keep him. Dan deserves all scrutiny on the defense, and its lack of personnel at this point. This is Dan’s defense.

Basically, the past 3 years were summed up last night. Holes everywhere, and a guy who doesn’t know how to fill them. I’m convinced if FF hadn’t gotten hurt, Trask never would’ve seen the field. Trask was a gem that fell into Dan’s reluctant lap, and Dan never learned a damn thing from it. We all better hope and pray that AR15 can blossom into the next Tebow, somehow outperform Dan’s abilities as a coach, and put the entire program on his shoulders, or nothing will change.

I’ll add this. I still don’t see why Davis is in as much as he is. Pierce and Weight are better, and Bowman needs to be a part of this offense to get through the year. You already know what you have, and don’t have, with MD.
Bowman? We got guys here talking about the sideways passing game and all I saw him doing the other night was running sideways. At least Davis was running between the tackles.

If it wasn't for Richardson, I don't know if anyone would watch at all the rest of the season.

Several observations, but I'm not gonna list them all...

Concerned about EJ, hope he just needs to get the jitters out.

AR15 is gonna be fun to watch.

While Davis is great with the passing game and solid in the run game, it's troublesome that he gets way too many snaps compared to DP, especially in goal line situations. Baffling roster decisions by Knox and DM.

todd exotic still sucks.

That said, I got 2 free tickets from my cousin who was out of town. First time in the Swamp since SOS helped chump get fired, first night game in forever. Really enjoyed the atmosphere, especially for, "2 Bits," "Here come the Gators," "We are the Boys," and "Won't back down." It wasn't an epic showdown, but after serving in the CG for 29 years, it was special to be home again. Don't take it for granted.

Go Gators!!!

@CGgater

With regard to you Davis assessment, and the baffling rationale of having him in near the goal line, don’t forget he was the back that we went with on 4th and goal from the 1 against Lsu last year. It was stuffed.

Pierce is where we need to go when we want some power. And, I'm still not quite beyond Davis' fumbles against Miami (I know that was 2 years ago) and aTm.

Exactly. What's the skinniest RB doing out there when we need to crack skulls at the goal line with Pierce?

Should have turned over last year, why would he change course now. This is what he wants, and if last year's performance didn't change it, what could really change his mind this time.

I don't quite get the criticism to use Davis when he had a good game (over 100 yards rushing and 7.4 ypc) and held onto the ball. It's very likely the coaches knew/trusted Davis would be successful and that we could run effectively with him as the lead RB vs an overmatched FAU.

No idea whether Davis is going to be the lead guy or not throughout the year--but if he keeps putting up this type of performance against the better teams on the schedule, it'll be tough to justify moving away from him too much and especially with the threat he brings on wheel routes and RB swing passes.

It really defies logic. You’d think after watching all the yards and points that were put up, he’d realize the correct course of action. All I can figure is he knows he sucks at recruiting and that he was really lucky to inherit Pitts, Toney, and Trask, and he’ll never pull that kind of talent together again.
I wonder if years from now, long after he has been fired, if CDM will ever contemplate that he probably made a mistake and blew the opportunity of a lifetime.

Or will he marvel at how he was right and the whole world was wrong, never stopping to realize that if the whole world is crazy, maybe it’s him.
