Should Kadarius Toney Start?

This turned into a big play and I admire his ability to freelance a disaster into a TD, but against a 1st string defense this probably doesn't turn out the same.

Toney is unable to make a quick decision and compounds that by moving forward into his RB. Toney's inability to make a quick read dooms this play and creates a big loss. Of course, the left tackle and TE deciding the DE wasn't actually a threat didn't help.

In my opinion, he waits too long to dump it off to the TE. The pass is slightly behind the receiver and he has to turn to catch the ball making it impossible to try to evade the defenders after the catch.

Again, the pass is behind the receiver. A first string defense would have a good shot at breaking this up or an interception.

Toney does nothing special or wrong on this one. I threw it in because Thompson had a really nice run. I wish he could hang onto the ball. He's a real threat on swing passes. He averages 26.3 yards per reception

IMO, because of the lack of blocking, no decision would have been good in this particular play. His slow decision making was most likely exactly because there was no good decision to be made.

You could be right. The TE and LT apparently never saw the DE.

There were already 2 defenders in the backfield before he even had a chance to read anything other than the "oh **** look" on his own face.

He put it on his back hip because there was a defender right in front of the WR. A pass "on the mark" would be picked.

Regardless, I thought Toney played fine but agree he is better off in the slot.

It appears that Toney makes a pre-snap read and changes the direction of the play. The left guard employs the matador style of blocking and the defender gets in the backfield immediately. The extra blocker on the right side heads up field quickly and no one blocks the DE. I think there is a good chance that there was poor communication with the OL on the changeup. No one seems to know what's going on.

Toney finds an open receiver, but the ball is poorly thrown and the play has no chance. He once again zeroes in on a target and never sees the wide open receiver in the middle of the field.

Toney's last play of the game is a big gainer. However, if that guy in the backfield were a 1st string SEC DL I think there is a good chance this play goes for a loss.

Here Toney unwisely decides to keep the ball and takes a loss.
To be fair, 46 is actually a 5'9" 233lb LB. Will Thomas.
Even if the defense didnt know the play, and they likely did, it wouldn't have been difficult to guess that 46 wasn't getting the ball there. Worst case, you have to chase down a slow LB rather than a speedy runner.

Nice observation. That does make a difference.

You could be right. I agree it would likely would have been picked had it led the receiver. Although his penchant for throwing behind receivers throughout the game gives one reason to believe otherwise. It would be a moot point if he had seen the open receiver in the middle of the field.

This is one of the big reasons I'm not keen on starting him. He's too green in the offense yet and multiple times missed seeing open receivers while staring down and throwing terrible throws to someone else.
