Which game, which moment, what were the circumstances?

Be sure to admit how wrong you had been til that point.

There'll be a whole lotta lying going on in this thread.

I had a premonition in 2005 when his wife was so close to having a baby that he coached from the press box for his first time. It was either the UT game W16-7 or the UF-FSU 34-something total beatdown. For some reason they kept a camera on Mullen in the booth a lot and I thought then that this cat was so psyched about his job, happy in the moment, and rightfully confident that he would one day become a great head coach. When lightning struck here It felt great.

BTW I would rather get a face slap than a like some times :-)

Yes, beyond that, dork. Next we need to raise trophies, not spout silly cliches like Tennessee.

Well, since he beat UT, LSU & FSU with the same team that only won 4 games the year before, I think we can agree things are looking up for a change.

I've dug up a number of quotes that contradict this, including one where he called Mullen a "scumbag", but I'm going to let it go because he's my favorite poster and I don't want to embarrass him.
Dear Ox,

From your least favorite poster: Uh huh

I will probably be convinced when he wins an SEC championship game as long as it does not take too long. Prior to Foley undermining the program UF won the SEC title in football in 1984, 1985, 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2006, and 2008. Then the Foley coup destroyed the program. So to me the standard for this program is 11 SEC titles in 25 years. [Or if you think that standard is too tough, then 12 SEC East titles in the 28 years of division play and that include Mac time.)

I am still a bit disappointed that Mullen did not achieve the 10 win minimum before the bowl that the right hire should have won with last years roster against last years schedule that with the collapse of FSU was even worse that I claimed last off season. I am more than a bit disappointed that Mullen lost to UK IN THE SWAMP and followed that up by losing to UMo IN THE SWAMP.

This season closed nicely, but it was a very close thing. Lose that SoCar game in which UF fell so far behind IN THE SWAMP and the season may have fallen apart. As it was UF closed winning that SoCar game, beating Idaho, beating an imploding FSU team and beating a possibly checked out Michigan team in the bowl.

As other have said, I am encourage that this team got better as the year went on. To my mind I am particularly encouraged that the offense got better. Spurrier and Meyer teams got better as the season went on usually and I agree this is a trait of good coaching. Still that must be tempered by the end of the schedule not being nearly as tough as some recent seasons due again to the implosion of FSU and not making the SEC championship game.

All the feel good will dissipate quickly if UF reverts next season. I believe that Mullen is a better coach than I thought when he was hired. But he did not win anything his first year at UF. So I am certainly not convince he is the right guy for the job long term until he does win something.

Agree about Megan, not sure if the rumors were true or not, but hopefully this is a better experience for her with Dan as head coach.

I wanted him instead of butters but I knew foley wouldn’t ever hire him. My reasons were pretty simple.

- he knew the program and fans
- he knew the SEC
- he did pretty well at MSU, considering it was MSU
- our offense seemed to drop after he left for MSU and never seemed to get better

Would I have liked the hire right after Meyer left? Nope. He needed time to learn head coaching elsewhere at a big program (MSU is still in the SEC). He needed to learn to be a CEO and develop his type of program.

Was thrilled with the hire, his first PC just was gravy.

At least he had head coaching experience in the SEC unlike that dip**** chump who was just a lifelong coordinator

Coordinator doesn't have shyt to do with it.

Some of you thought that fvkking retard Butterteeth and maybe Taggelwain were good candidates "because they had been head coaches".

Chimp lied, talked about multiple offenses and scoring points. Butters already had a track record of being average at best.

Either you have the ingredients our you don't. A good AD should be able to see that (Stoops and Lincoln Riley).

It has nothing to do with hiring coordinators.

Don’t lump me in with those that liked either of those hires. My point about a coordinator is that he said Mullen wasn’t ready because he wasn’t experienced...but we hired someone less experienced and less successful

We didnt hire Mullinz bc we didnt like him or any of the members of the last staff.

Unfortunately, that mentality and criminality needed purged.

When MSU thumped LSU in 2017, believing Butters wasn’t the answer and his history with UF’s offense, I was hoping Mullen would be our next hire.

The game.....
Vanderbilt
The moment....
last few minutes of first half and entire 2nd half
Circumstances....
On the road and down despite the offense playing fairly well early. We had fumbled on their goal line or didn't make a 4th and goal and they came back and scored a couple times and were up 21-3. Even though it looked bad on the scoreboard "it didn't feel bad" and the players looked no different than if the score were reversed.

I remember consoling Ox in the Chatbox, he was whining and pissing about losing to Vandy and I told him after we scored 10 points to end the half that this team was not going to lose this game, he remained unconvinced and disappeared to go watch OSU or Auburn for the rest of the afternoon .... Our guys were just getting started and it occurred to me then that this team was becoming a second half team.... Instead of melting like Butter(s), pardon the pun, we were knocking peoples d !cks in the dirt when it mattered most....Scarlett off LT for 8 yards then Perine gashing the right side for 12, on and on it went(The kind of running game Football porn is made of)....Mix in a nice toss by Franks here and there, a QB option run and we were building some serious momentum...

That's when I had my first feeling we were at least headed in a better place than where we had been in many seasons.

I was terribly disappointed when it was announced we were hiring Mullen. I stewed for about 24 hours. After careful deliberation, I decided maybe he’s exactly what we needed...stability and a guy familiar with the SEC and UF in particular. We were in danger of becoming the Voles. So, I decided to give him a chance.
I expected about 6-7 wins with the roster he inherited. Obviously, he far exceeded that.

The moment he won me over was listening to his presser driving home from the Mizzou loss (only game I attended and my son’s first). He got that a loss like that was unacceptable at UF and he was pissed! He challenged his team’s manhood. The team responded, took on the personality of their HC and finished the season like we expect our Gators to do. Mullen gets it and I’m firmly in his camp. I hope he’s able to recruit and hire well enough to take us to the promised land. If not, I know he’ll leave behind a solid foundation for the next guy.

Your revisionist history is legendary. Please leave me out of your delusions.

I was encouraged going into that half.

I'll bet you were....The Urban's were up 38-0 on Toledo.....
My friend, I'm 10 times the Gator fan you are. After all, didn't Meyer once coach UF to greatness? What's your excuse for slobbering all over Bert all those years?

Great post, Crete. Almost Norm Carlsen - like in describing that second half. Also, thanks for my new favorite sports term - "football porn". I know I'll use that next season.

I think the fact that Bert won as many B10 Title's(3) as Urchin at a program that has about a tenth of the resources and tradition of OSU speaks volumes on your oversight of his elite coaching ability....Along with the fact he literally kicked everyone's hero at the time(Butters) right in the nutsack and caused his eventual downfall from UF....
